John A. Mercer
LINCOLN - John A. Mercer, 90, of Lincoln and formerly of Pawtucket passed away on June 24, 2013 surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of the late Catherine E. (Smith) Mercer. Mr. Mercer was born in Pawtucket, the son of Ernest and Margaretta (Reilly) Mercer.
Mr. Mercer served his country in the US Army during World War II being deployed to the European Theatre. He retired from the Providence Journal Company after 40 years of service and was also a member of the Pawtucket Personnel Board from more than 30 years.
Family was everything to Mr. Mercer. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be greatly missed by all who were lucky enough to have known him.
Mr. Mercer is survived by his children, Peggy Duffell and her husband David of Lincoln, John A. Mercer, Jr. and his wife Bonnie of Lincoln, Thomas Mercer and his wife Susan of Lincoln, Timothy Mercer of North Providence, Rosemary Lloyd and her husband Douglas of Milford, CT, Susan Gupta and her husband Romel of Lincoln and Terrence Mercer and his wife Karen of Pawtucket. Mr. Mercer was also the father of the late Donna Froment. He also had fourteen grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Mr. Mercer is predeceased by his brothers Ernest and Earl Mercer and his sister Marion Daley.
The funeral for Mr. Mercer will be Thursday, June 27th at 9:00 am from the MANNING-HEFFERN FUNERAL HOME, 68 Broadway, Pawtucket. There will be a Mass of Christian Burial in the Holy Family Parish Church, formerly St. Joseph's Church, 195 Walcott Street Pawtucket at 10:00 am. His burial with full military honors will be in Mt. St. Mary's Cemetery, Pawtucket. The calling hours for Mr. Mercer will be Wednesday from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mr. Mercer's memory to the Rhode Island Special Olympics, Wampanoag Warriors, 370 George Washington Highway, Smithfield, RI 02917.
