John E. Vickers
CHURCH HILL, MD - John E. Vickers, 90 of Church Hill, MD, died April 30, 2011.
Mr. Vickers was born on June 6, 1920 in Hillsgrove, RI, son of the late William and Lena Walton Vickers. He was raised in Rhode Island and enlisted in U.S. Army in 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1947. Later that year he married and moved to Greenbelt, MD, where he worked in Sheet Metal. Working for various companies, including Litton Industries. Later lived in Berwyn Heights and Church Hill, MD. John loved flying and enjoyed woodworking, playing the guitar, fishing, gardening and harvesting vegetables. John loved living near the water and had spent his life building boats. He was a member of the OX5 Club of America and the American Pilots Association and the American Legion.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years Viola C. Sampson Vickers in 2005, as well as 4 brothers and 5 sisters.
Mr. Vickers is survived by his son John Steele of Seaford, DE, a sister Eliza Pierce of Narragansett, RI, 4 grandchildren; Vickie Quinn (Danny) of Chestertown, MD, Matt Steele of Chestertown, MD, Tracey Rodney (Scott) of Galena, MD, and Millie Steele (Jason Hansen) of Smyrna, DE, 5 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson.
Friends may call on Thursday, May 5 from 6 to 8 pm in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St. Galena, MD Burial will be held on Friday, May 6 at 2pm in Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter, RI.
