PAWTUCKET - Jeanne (Rice) Murphy, an award winning reporter for the Evening (Pawtucket) Times died December 30. She was the wife of the late James M. Murphy Jr., former managing editor of The Times.
Born in Pawtucket, she was a lifelong resident of the city. She joined the news staff of the Times in 1966 and covered local news, the urban renewal efforts in Pawtucket in the 1960 and 70"s, and education issues in the city. Later in her career, her writing focused on the Living Pages, often writing food, cooking, home, and family related stories. She retired from the Times in 1991. In 1995, she was inducted into the Rhode Island Journalism Hall of Fame.
She is survived by her son Gregory and wife Sharon Murphy of Attleboro; her daughter Sheila and husband James Martin of Boston and four grandchildren, David and Meghan Murphy and Nicholas and Rory Martin, all of Boston.
The funeral will be held at 10:00 a.m. On Wednesday, January 5 at the Manning-Heffern Funeral Home, 68 Broadway, Pawtucket, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Teresa's Church, Newport Avenue, Pawtucket. Friends are invited to calling hours on Tuesday, January 4 from 4-7 p.m. At the Manning-Heffern Funeral Home.
