Janice Box

PAWTUCKET - Janice "Jan" (Drake) Box, 85, of Pawtucket, died peacefully Sunday, July 20, 2014 at home surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of Joseph J. Box, DDS.
Born in North Brookfield, MA, a daughter of the late Leonard and Mabel (Chadbourne) Drake, she had lived in Pawtucket for over 50 years and summered in North Falmouth, MA for over 50 years.
Mrs. Box was a registered nurse and a 1951 graduate of Pembroke College (now Brown University) with a Bachelor of Science Degree and an RN Degree. She was one of two students to make it through the 5-year dual program. She was an active member of the Pembroke College Alumnae Club and its treasurer for many years. She told many happy stories about her time at Pembroke.
She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Sons of Italy, the Wild Harbor Yacht Club, and the New Silver Beach Association.
Mrs. Box was a communicant of St. Maria Goretti Church, Pawtucket.
A self-proclaimed and proud Swamp Yankee, she was smart, feisty, playful and funny. She loved spirited discourse and had deliberate opinions. Her mischievous sparkle, smile, wry sense of humor and sideways smile could light up a room. Jan graciously listened to the many deliveries of her husband's corny jokes. Always active, she loved to play tennis, to travel and to have big adventures. Some of her most meaningful travels were to San Lucas Toliman where she assisted her husband in providing dental care to the Maya Indians in the Highlands of Guatemala. An avid gardener, she could make anything grow. She was known for keeping her sidewalks and street impeccably clean. Jan touched many places, pets and people with her enthusiasm and warmth. She never stopped welcoming people into her home and family and was a second mom to many, including a young man who had escaped the Vietnamese conflict. She wholly cherished her husband, children, grandchildren, extended family and friends.
Besides her husband, she is survived by three daughters, Sharon Holtcamp of Cleveland Heights, OH, Krista Box (Matthew Riley) of Washington, DC, and Suzy Box (Harry Adler) of Cranston; one son, David Box (Diana) of Tampa, FL; five grandchildren, Anthony, Lindsay and Alex Box, and Nicholas and William Holtcamp; and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Richard Milo Drake.
Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held FRIDAY, JULY 25 at 11 A.M. in St. Maria Goretti Church, 155 Power Road, Pawtucket. Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket.
