PAWSOX PLAYER MOVES - The PawSox today placed SS Jose Iglesias on the
7-day disabled list (retroactive to May 29) with lower back soreness.
Iglesias, who is hitting .269 in 42 games this season and was
Pawtucket's top hitter in May (.341 in 20 games), has not played since
May 25 vs. Toledo.
The PawSox today added veteran RHP Mark Prior to their roster. Prior,
31, will be used out of the PawSox bullpen. He was signed by the Red
Sox as a free agent on May 2 and has been pitching for Boston's extended
spring training team in Fort Myers, FL for the past month. Prior has
not pitched in the major leagues in nearly six years since being
shutdown in August of 2006 while pitching for the Chicago Cubs. He had
shoulder surgery in the spring of 2007 and again in May of 2008. He has
tried comeback attempts with the Padres, Rangers, and Yankees but has
not returned to the big leagues. Last season he appeared in 12-innings
for three different New York Yankee affiliates including 1 scoreless
innings for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre before his season ended with
a groin injury. He also underwent sports hernia surgery this past
Prior was the 2nd choice overall in the 2001 draft by the Chicago Cubs
(one pick after Joe Mauer went to Minnesota) following an outstanding
collegiate career at USC where he won the Dick Howser Trophy as the top
college player of the year in 2001. Less than a year and a half after
being drafted he was pitching for the Cubs (6-6, 3.32 in 19 starts in
2002). He had a superb season for Chicago in 2003 when he was 3rd in
the National League Cy Young Award voting after going 18-6 with a 2.43
ERA in 30 GS with 245 SO in 211.1 IP to held lead the Cubs to the NLCS.
Prior battled an achilles tendon injury in 2004 when he was 6-4, 4.02 in
21 GS for the Cubs. In 2005 he suffered a fractured right elbow when he
was hit by a line-drive but did go 11-7, 3.67 in 27 starts for the Cubs.
In 2006 he battled shoulder tendonitis and was just 1-6 with a 7.21 ERA
in 9 starts for Chicago. In the spring of 2007 he underwent right
shoulder surgery and missed all of 2007, 2008, and 2009. In September
of 2010 he made one relief appearance for Oklahoma City (AAA-Texas).
Overall in 106 career major league starts he is 42-29 with a 3.51 ERA.
In 29 minor league games (23 starts) he is 7-5 with a 2.84 ERA.
