Hilda L. Eichin, R.N.
LINCOLN - Hilda L. Eichin, R.N., 86, a resident at The Holiday Retirement Home, Manville, passed away Sunday, October 9, 2011. Born in Pawtucket on March 8, 1925, she was a 1943 graduate of Tolman High School (formerly East High School) and trained to be a Registered Nurse at the Rhode Island Hospital School of Nursing under the US Cadet Nurse Corps program established during World War II, graduating as a Cadet Nurse in September of 1946. Her goal was to become a medical missionary to Africa. In 1949 she completed 18 months of missions studies at Central Bible College, Springfield, MO. Returning to Rhode Island, she worked as an Emergency Response (ER) nurse at the Rhode Island Hospital. She did additional studies in tropical diseases and became a Certified Midwife in December, 1950. In early 1951, she received an appointment from the Assemblies of God World Missions along with another nurse as co-worker to establish a new clinic at the request of the British Government in the remote bush country of northern Ghana (formerly Gold Coast), West Africa. After completion of this assignment in 1952 she returned to Rhode Island residing in both the Town's of Cumberland and Lincoln, and studied at Barrington College, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree while serving as the College Nurse. Her nursing career included service at the Rhode Island and Woonsocket (Landmark) Hospitals; with the Woonsocket Visiting Nurse Association (VNA), and until her retirement in 1992 at The Holiday Retirement Home.
Hilda was an active member of the South Attleboro Assembly of God (originally located in Pawtucket) and served many years on its Missions Board. She also traveled extensively throughout Europe, the Middle East and North America during her vacations and retirement years and to visit family and friends until her confinement during the past year at The Holiday because of health reasons.
Hilda was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest F. Eichin in 1995 and Louise A. (Leinhos) Eichin in 2001. She is survived by one sister, Margaret C. Ireland of Burlington, VT and a brother, Paul E. Eichin of Spokane, WA; a niece, Sherrill Meshel and family of Stony Brook, NY; nephews, Stephen and Scott Ireland and their families of Shelburne, VT and Douglas Ireland and his family of Lee, NH; cousins, Robert and Delores Leinhos of North Smithfield, RI and numerous other relatives and close friends.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Hilda's life will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at the South Attleboro Assembly of God, 1052 Newport Ave., South Attleboro, MA. Burial was at Swan Point Cemetery, Blackstone Blvd., Providence. In place of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to the Church Missions Fund or to the S. D.
