NORTH KINGSTON - Beaven, Helen J. (Diehl, Whitaker), 95, a resident of Pojac Point, North Kingstown, for 66 years, passed away on July 14th at Westview Health Care Center, West Warwick, after a brief illness.
She was born to the late John Frederick and Annie (Monahan) Diehl in Pawtucket, RI. After her mother's death in the 1918 Spanish Flu epidemic, she was adopted and raised by her maternal aunt and uncle, the late Eva (Monahan) and Silas Whitaker, whom she regarded as her parents.
She attended Our Lady of the Elms, a Catholic boarding school in Chicopee, MA, and Pawtucket High School, where she graduated in 1935. She was employed as a bookkeeper at Cooley Manufacturing in Pawtucket until her marriage in 1940 to George A. Beaven, Jr., of Pawtucket, with whom she shared 64 years of marriage until his death in 2005.
She is survived by three children, Dr. Gail B. Wangerin and husband, Lawrence, of Andover, MA, Geoffrey A. Beaven and wife, Joan, of West Greenwich, and George A. Beaven, III of North Kingstown; three grandchildren, Rebecca Wangerin-Wolfe and husband ,Peter, of Reading, MA; Benjamin P. Wangerin of North Reading, MA, and Elizabeth F. Beaven of West Greenwich; two great-grandchildren, Althea K. and Cassandra H. Wolfe of Reading, MA; her sister-in-law, Helen M. Puleo of Lincoln, and many beloved nieces and nephews.
As per her wishes, cremation will be followed by a private interment. A memorial service will be held Monday, July 23rd at 11:00 am at Four Corners Community Church, 200 Angell Rd, Cumberland, RI, followed by a reception at the Puleo-Green Home in Lincoln, RI. Friends and family are cordially invited to attend.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Resident Council Fund at Westview Health Care Center.
