On June 23, The Times published a photograph of a Quonset hut housing a USNR training center that used to stand at 1 Moeller Way in Pawtucket. That site is now home to the Pawtucket Boys and Girls Club. After that photo appeared, a man named Stanley Kumiega, originally from Central Falls and now living in Cumberland, came in to show us this photo taken of the Naval Reserves Division 1-36 taken in front of the facility in June 1964.
During his time in the USNR, Kumiega served aboard the USS Donner, which was launched in 1945 and recommissioned in 1950 after the start of the Korean War. Kumiega was aboard the Donner on Jan. 31, 1961, when it recovered the Mercury-Redstone 2 space capsule containing the first astronaut chimpanzee, Ham, who participated in a 16-minute suborbital flight.
