PAWTUCKET — A grand jury has decided not to bring charges against two Pawtucket police officers who shot to death a Massachusetts man who pulled a gun during a traffic stop in May.
The Rhode Island attorney general's office said on Thursday that the Providence County Grand Jury found the shooting was legally justified.
The officers said 37-year-old Jamie Coyle got out of the car with a gun, and they opened fire to protect themselves. Police pulled him over because he appeared to match the description of a suspect wanted in Massachusetts for an assault with a firearm earlier that day.
According to published reports, Coyle's daughter had reported her father twice for assaults and told Attleboro police in 2011 her father wouldn't hesitate to use weapons against them.
