CENTRAL FALLS - Gerard A. Heroux, 93, died Wednesday, February 16, 2011, at his home in Central Falls with the members of his loving family at his bedside. He was a prominent funeral director for more than 70 years and currently held the lowest embalmer's license in the state of Rhode Island. He had a great memory and deep knowledge of the genealogy of the families he served.
Born in Central Falls, a son of the late Arthur W. and Beatrice (Gendron) Heroux, he was educated in Notre Dame School and Sacred Heart Academy in Central Falls and graduated from St. Raphael Academy in Pawtucket with the Class of 1935. After several months at Providence College, he studied at and graduated from the New England Institute of Anatomy in Boston.
Gerard Heroux was associated with Credit Union Central Falls, now Navigant Credit Union, as a member of the Board of Directors, ending as its president for many years until his retirement in the 1970's. He served in the U.S. Air Force from April 1942 and was honorably discharged in November 1945.
His great hobby was raising and flying homing pigeons. He was a member of the R.I. Pigeon Club for many, many years, and at the age of 16 he served as its secretary. He was also a member of the American Racing Pigeon Union Inc. He bought many pigeons from Belgium and their progeny earned him many trophies and awards.
He was the husband of the late Lucille (Jacques) Heroux and is survived by one daughter, Carol Briden of Pawtucket; two grandsons, David F. Briden and James A. Briden, both of Rumford, to whom he was very devoted and in whose lives he played a central role. He was the great-grandfather of Andrew Gerard, Rachel, Shannon, Hope and Tess Briden. He is also survived by two sisters, Madeleine L. Heroux of Central Falls and Constance T. Lischio of North Kingstown. He was the brother of the late Beatrice R. Heroux, Pauline Gingras and Jacqueline Pirani.
His funeral will be held on Wednesday, February 23, at 9 a.m. from the DARLINGTON MORTUARY OF L. HEROUX & SON, 1042 Newport Avenue, Pawtucket, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m., concelebrated by Father Robert Perron and Father Otoniel Gomez in St. Matthew Church, 1030 Dexter St., Central Falls. Calling hours in the funeral home will be on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. In Notre Dame Cemetery, Daggett Avenue, Pawtucket.
