SMITHFIELD - Francisco Lopes, 83, of Smithfield and beloved husband of Maria de Lourdes Almeida Lopes for 58 years, passed away peacefully Thursday morning surrounded by his loving family.
Born on February 8, 1927 in Esmolfe, Penalva do Castelo, Portugal, he was the son of the late Jose Lopes and Miquelina de Campos.
Francisco was employed as a machine operator for 23 years at American Insulated Wire and Standard Nut and Bolt Company in Cumberland, retiring in 1992. Prior to emigrating to the United States with his family in 1969, he worked as a supervisor for a pine resin company in Portugal. He also served in the Portuguese Army from 1948 - 1950.
He enjoyed spending time with family, playing dominoes, walking and tending to his vegetable garden with his wife.
In addition to his wife, Francisco is survived by a daughter, Maria R. Saraiva and her husband, David, of Smithfield, and a son Joseph Lopes, of Westerly.
He also leaves behind a grandson, Paul L. Saraiva and his wife, Jenell, of Smithfield and a great-grandson, Antonio, as well as two brothers, Joao and Arsidio Lopes, and three sisters, Cecilia Amaral, Ernestina Fernandes and Lucinda Costa. He also is predeceased by his two older brothers, Antonio and Manuel.
A celebration of his life will be held Monday, December 13 at 10 AM from the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11AM at Our Lady of Fatima Church in Cumberland. Internment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cumberland.
