Florence M. Szczes
NORTH SMITHFIELD - Florence M. (Cordeau) Szczes, 89, of North Smithfield, died Friday, September 2, 2011 in the Philip Hulitar Inpatient Center, Providence. Her husband, John Szczes died in 1978. Born in Nova Scotia, Canada, she was the daughter of the late Wilfred and Hortense "Lena" (Poirer) Cordeau. Mrs. Szczes lived in Pawtucket for most of her life before moving to North Smithfield in 1984.
She worked at the former Ideal Jewelry in Providence for 15 years, retiring in 1981 and had previously worked for many area textile companies. She was a member and communicant of St. John the Evangelist Church, and a member of the St. John's Senior Citizens and the Gatewood Association of North Smithfield before moving to the Steere House Nursing Home in Providence while a member of the PACE program.
She is survived by her foster granddaughter, Laurie Robitaille of North Smithfield and two sisters, Adele Lubera of Central Falls and Gloria Montecalvo of Cranston. She was predeceased by her daughter, Julie Szczes, her brother Wilfred Cordeau and four sisters Ruth Cordeau, Jennie Lubera, Rosalie Skrizmarz and Lorraine Turcotte.
Her funeral will be held Wednesday, September 7, 2011 beginning with visitation at 10 AM in the Holt Funeral Home, 510 So. Main St., Woonsocket with a Mass at 11:30 AM in St. John the Evangelist Church, 63 Church Street, Slatersville. Burial will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Cumberland. www.holtfuneralhome.com
