PAWTUCKET â A new ethnic style restaurant with the catchy name âLa Vaca Flacaâ will be opening soon at 139 Broad St.
The City Council's Board of License Commissioners approved the food and liquor licenses for the applicant, La Vaca Flaca, Inc., last Wednesday following a public hearing.
An attorney for the operator of La Vaca Flaca told the board that the restaurant will have seating for about 39 patrons and parking available in an adjacent lot as well as on-street. He said the eatery will be open for lunch and dinner every day and breakfast, lunch and dinner Thursday through Sunday. The restaurant also plans to offer a large take-out menu.
The proprietor, Joanna Melgar, told the board that this is her first time operating a restaurant. However, City Councilor Timothy Rudd, the councilman for that district, complimented Melgar on the professionalism of her business plan and called La Vaca Flaca âa positive addition to the community.â
Melgar's attorney said her intent is to create food that is âconducive to the communityâ and is reasonably priced. The menu will feature mostly traditional Mexican food, along with some Caribbean and Dominican dishes.
Councilors were told that âla vaca flacaâ means âthe skinny cow.â This is the name of Melgar's favorite restaurant in Guatamala, her attorney said. The business is still undergoing renovations and is expected to be open within the next 30 days.
