Edward B. Hebden
Friendly Guy at the Melvin Village General Store
MELVIN VILLAGE, N.H. - Edward (Ted) B. Hebden, 86 of Sodom Rd., Melvin Village died March 4, 2011 in Franklin, NH.
Ted was born in Lonsdale, RI August 9, 1924 son of the late William D. and Janet (Kinniburgh) Hebden. He graduated from Cumberland High School class of 1942 and entered the Navy in 1943 earning a "Fleet Appointment" to the US Naval Academy after attending Naval Academy Prep School. He graduated from the US Naval Academy class of 1948 and was assigned to various ships in the Mediterranean and Korea. He remained active in the Naval Reserve until retiring in 1968 as a Lieutenant Commander.
Ted worked as a manufactures representative in the confectionary trade. In 1973, Ted and his wife purchased and ran the Melvin Village General Store until they retired in 1986. They enjoyed their years at the store, meeting many new friends and being a part of the community.
He was an active member of the Melvin Village Community Church, and a member of the Masons and Shriners.
As Teddy Bear the Shriners clown, Ted entertained young and old at events around the state. He learned to ski at the age of 69 and was a chaperone on many local school skiing events. He was a member of the "Over 70" and "Over 80" Ski clubs. He was also a "Meals on Wheels" driver for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marguerite (Peg) (Nuss) Hebden of Melvin Village, 3 children Stephen D. Hebden of Philadelphia, PA, Natalie A. Hebden of Melvin Village, Meredith M. Hebden of Charlotte, NC, sisters Barbara Fugere, Jean Waterman, Elizabeth Bertanshaw and Gladys Mengal, 2 grandchildren Evan Schafer and Gabrielle Hebden-Pearl.
A Memorial Service will be at 2:00 PM March 19, 2011 at the Melvin Village Community Church. Burial will be in the spring.
