Edith C. Smiley
NORTH PROVIDENCE - Edith C. (Jones) Smiley, 79, passed away Saturday, May 7, 2011 at Grandview Center, Cumberland. She was the beloved wife of Philip B. Smiley. Mr. and Mrs. Smiley were married for 57 years.
Born in Cleveland, OH, a daughter of the late William and Ella V. (Snyder) Jones, she had lived in Lincoln for 50 years before moving to North Providence over 5 years ago.
Mrs. Smiley taught first and second grades in Fairlawn and Saylesville Schools for 29 years, retiring in 1996. During her teaching career, she was known for her cheery optimism, her sense of fairness, and her devotion to her pupils. She not only loved teaching, she loved people. She was living proof that a person finds meaning in their life not by doing what they like, but liking what they do.
She was a 1953 graduate of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa Society.
Besides her husband, she is survived by her loving children, Linda Smiley Resnevic and her husband, George M. Resnevic DMD of Lincoln, Philip B. Smiley, Jr. and his wife, Ellen of East Greenwich, the late Paul W. Smiley of the Ladd Center, and Janet Smiley Carucci and her husband, Philip of Stoneham, MA; and her beloved grandchildren, Jean, Kathryn and Emily Resnevic, Carolyn, Jillian and Glenn Smiley, and Scott and Sarah Carucci.
Her funeral will be held TUESDAY, MAY 10 at 12:30 P.M. at BELLOWS-FALSO FUNERAL CHAPEL, 160 River Road, Lincoln. Burial will be in Rehoboth Village Cemetery, Rehoboth, MA.
