Cumberland blasts Glocester/Burrillville; same two teams to meet for District IV softball title

June 30, 2014

Cumberland’s Abbie Vallely keeps her eyes on the ball during an at-bat last week against the North Smithfield/Woonsocket Co-op team. Monday night saw Vallely fire a complete-game three-hitter with 10 strikeouts and three walks as Cumberland I rolled to a 15-2 victory over Glocester/Burrillville Co-op. BURRILLVILLE — Cumberland I head coach Steve D’Abrosca had hoped for a premier collective performance from his crew on Monday evening, but wasn’t quite sure if he’d get it.

His troops did, and didn’t, surprise him.

Righthander Abbie Vallely turned in a magical performance in the circle, yielding just three hits and a trio of walks while whiffing 10, and his offense produced four doubles as Cumberland I coasted to a 15-2 triumph over Glocester/Burrillville in a R.I. District IV Major Division (11-12) Tournament round-robin finale at Hauser Field.

The interesting twist in it stemmed from the fact that Glocester/Burrillville skipper Dave Peloquin chose not to pitch stellar ace Rebecca Arndt, and he had good reason. Both Cumberland I and his club had rolled through their previous three contests and were already destined to play for the District IV title.

The victory claimed by D’Abrosca and Co. naturally meant something, but a state tournament bid will be on the line when they take the Diamond Hill Park turf at 6 p.m., Wednesday.
