PAWTUCKET — A city man apparently stabbed his wife to death inside their Charlton Avenue house on Monday and then took his own life inside a relative’s garage later that day, Pawtucket Police said.
According to Major Arthur Martins, the body of the victim, Maria Almeida Turmel, was found by her adopted son inside the kitchen of her house at 63 Charlton Ave. at around 3 p.m. The 32-year-old mother of three had been stabbed several times.
Turmel’s family had reportedly become worried after they hadn’t seen or heard from her since 7 a.m., so a relative helped her 7-year-old son enter through a window.
Police began looking at Turmel’s husband, 35-year-old Antonio Dos Santos, as a key suspect because he had not gone to his job that day and family members had been unable to reach him. Pawtucket Police tried to locate him through his cell phone, which pointed to a location in Brockton, Mass. Almost at the same time as Brockton Police found Dos Santos’ car, a relative called 911 to report finding him dead inside of a detached garage at 4 Sycamore Ave. in that city, police said..
Dos Santos, who had also gone by the name of Alvaro Santos, had apparently committed suicide and had left a note behind.
Martins said that police are still awaiting the official reports from the state medical examiner, but all indications seem to be that Dos Santos killed Turmel and then took his own life.
According to news reports, Dos Santos was Turmel’s second husband, and she had a son and a daughter from a previous marriage, along with the couple’s adopted son. The younger boy had been adopted after his mother, a friend of Turmel’s, had died of cancer, according to reports from family members.
According to news reports, some relatives had indicated to police that there had been recent marital problems between the couple, but other family members disputed this.
Pawtucket Police had no previous reports of domestic assaults involving the couple, Martins said. It is the first murder in the city this year.
