PAWTUCKET â€” Despite a couple of last-minute pleas from residents to do otherwise, the City Council voted Wednesday night to give final passage to a new operating budget of about $178 million that will necessitate a property tax increase for homeowners of 80 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation.
The 7-1 vote followed the same pattern as it did at a session on June 7, when 8 of 9 council members gave the spending plan proposed by Mayor Donald Grebien their reluctant approval. Councilor James Chadwick, who had voted to support the budget at the last meeting, was absent on Wednesday.
