Basket drive to aid 350 families

November 20, 2012

PAWTUCKET — Thanks to the generosity of many local businesses and members of the community, over 350 Pawtucket families will have a more bountiful and nutritious Thanksgiving.
This is the second year that Laureen Grebien, wife of Mayor Donald Grebien, has taken over the “Holiday Baskets” program that was begun by her predecessor. Joan Doyle, wife of former Mayor James Doyle, had begun the food drive on a small scale with her friend, Stan Lachut, some 35 years ago at Shea High School and continued it throughout her husband's administration. After assuming the role of first lady, Grebien, assisted by Pawtucket Economic and Cultural Affairs Officer Herb Weiss, assembled her own team of volunteers to keep the tradition going.
Monday, from noon to 5 p.m. and today, from 8:30 a.m. to noon, Grebien, Weiss, and the other volunteers will be giving out the baskets at the Pawtucket Planning and Redevelopment Department, on the second floor of the Blackstone Valley Visitors Center at 175 Main St.
