New York Yankees Baseball | Proud parents reflect on Mason Williams' call-up to the majors

Mason Williams is now a major-league outfielder for the New York Yankees, a move the team made official on Thursday.

The 23-year-old native of Pawtucket put himself on the radar by batting .318 with a .397 on-base percentage along with a .795 OPS. Serving as the leadoff hitter for both Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Williams has stolen 13 bases in 54 games.     

Tolman Baseball | Tigers just 1 win away from Division II finals

WARWICK – This time, Tolman was determined not to let Warwick Vets back in the game.

Peter Microulis spun seven innings of two-run ball and came through with a clutch base hit as the Tigers held off the Hurricanes, 6-2, in the Division II Regional Pod I playoffs on Tuesday. The win places Tolman in the driver’s seat as either Warwick or West Warwick will have to beat the Tigers twice in order to advance to the Division II finals.

Cumberland Baseball | Wright, Clippers secure trip to Final Four for second straight year

CUMBERLAND – Once again, Cumberland junior Chris Wright lived up to his billing as ace of the pitching staff.

Wright tossed six shutout innings on Monday as the Clippers advanced to the Final Four portion of the Division I tournament courtesy of a 4-0 win over Central at Tucker Field. The victory enabled Cumberland to clinch the Regional Pod IV portion of the tournament.

PROVIDENCE  –  Just as it had in a previous regular-season game on May 18, St. Raphael Academy allowed Moses Brown to pounce to a quick advantage during Sunday’s R.I. Division II Tournament winners’ bracket semifinal at Rhode Island College.

Tolman Baseball | Otis, Tigers prevail 1-0 in eight over West Warwick after epic pitchers’ duel

PAWTUCKET  –  Fittingly, it was a few minutes after high noon on Sunday when the epic pitcher’s duel between Tolman High’s Steve Otis and West Warwick’s Tom Doran reached its conclusion.

After the two traded zeros for seven full innings, Otis stepped to the plate in the bottom of the eighth and ripped an RBI double to deep center field to claim a 1-0 walkoff win for the Tigers in their Division II/Region I tournament preliminary at Ted McConnon Memorial Field.

PAWTUCKET – Just call them the No-Quit Lady Clippers.

Less than 24 hours after surviving a grueling 18-17 contest Cranston West, No. 6 seed Cumberland was asked to once again rally, this time against third-seeded Tolman in a Division I winners’ bracket contest. Down 6-1 in the top of the fifth inning on Saturday morning at Slater Park’s Bailey Field, the Clippers scored six times in the frame and added three runs in the seventh to prevail by a 10-6 count.

CUMBERLAND  –  With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, junior Kat Kent ripped a triple to right-center, and scored on sophomore Emily Anderson’s timely two-bagger to deep center, to lift Cumberland High to a seemingly-safe 18-12 lead.

The Clippers didn’t know it at the time, but that proved to be the clinching run during a wild 18-17 win over Cranston West in a R.I. Division I Tournament preliminary game at Tucker Field on Friday.

PAWTUCKET – Student-athletes who participate in spring interscholastic sports at Tolman and Shea high schools were recently recognized and awarded The Key Player Spirit Award.
This award sponsored by Key Group, Mortgage Division and Spirit Recognition. The award is presented to one athlete from each fall sports team who exemplify perseverance, effort, spirit, sportsmanship, teamwork, role model, determination and academics.

Lincoln High Baseball | Palmieri shines on the mound, at the plate in Lions' 4-1 win over Middletown

LINCOLN – To exhibit how calm 6-5 senior righthander Mason Palmieri seemed prior to his Lincoln High contingent’s R.I. Division I Tournament prelim tilt opposite Middletown on Wednesday afternoon, teammate Alex Levin coaxed him into a little fun.

Palmieri, holding two bats to his head to portray a bull’s horns, galloped at Levin, who waved a warm-up jacket to resemble a matador.

Those crazy antics drew laughs galore from their teammates.

Tolman Softball | Tigers roar past East Greenwich in Div. I playoff opener

PAWTUCKET  –  If there was any question whether Tolman High’s bats would be ready for a R.I. Division I Tournament prelim against East Greenwich on Wednesday afternoon, they answered it but fast.

The Tigers exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the first, then bludgeoned the Avengers for nine more in the second to coast to a 19-1 “mercy-rule” triumph at Slater Park’s Bailey Field.
