High School Basketball | Shea, St. Raphael, Tolman teams take their best shots in playoffs Tuesday

PAWTUCKET – Tolman boys, and Shea and St. Raphael Academy girls, are among the Blackstone Valley area teams competing Tuesday night in the RIIL playoffs.

The Raiders didn’t face the Mariners this season, as the latter represents III-South, but they’ll be in for a battle.

PAWTUCKET  –  Tolman High girls’ hoop head coach Tammy Drape admitted Monday afternoon she never thought her club would be in the position it is now earlier this season.

Her Tigers had opened the Division III-North slate with a dismal 0-5 mark, and the idea of playing in the post-season tourney seemed all but lost.

Kentucky played host to SEC league door matt Auburn and appropriately blew them out of the gym. Kentucky used a 23-2 run in the first half to break open a 27 point first half lead. They never looked back as Auburn never seriously threatened again. Karl Anthony Towns led Kentucky with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

R.I. Indoor Track | ALL TOGETHER: Central Falls relay team finds harmony at state meet

PROVIDENCE – Four juniors from Central Falls High came to Saturday’s Rhode Island Indoor Track & Field Championships in search of individual success.

Instead, Yeury Galva, Sam Adolfo, Jailson Varela Sanches and Stive Mendes pooled their talents together and produced a second-place finish in the 4x400 relay. Their time of 3:35.55 was barely two seconds off the winning pace set by North Kingstown.

PROVIDENCE – There’s never too little to write about when it comes to the Blackstone Valley region and the indoor track & field state championships. 
 
Saturday’s meet at the Providence Career & Technical Academy field house figures to be no exception with the chase for first-place finishes and berths in the New Englands beginning at 11:30 a.m. with the field events. The running events will commence at noontime.

NORTH SMITHFIELD  –  Tolman High’s veteran mentor Tammy Drape admitted to being a little nervous about taking on North Smithfield in her Division III-North season finale on Thursday night, and she had reason.
 
Despite an advantage in size down low, her Tigers had displayed inconsistency in all aspects of the game throughout the campaign. She worried outwardly, “Which team am I going to get?”

That’s why the 27-year-old city resident and professional kickboxer is so revved up about facing a Boston sheriff named Julio Pena in a Lion Fight Promotions’ Muay Thai (pronounced “moy tie”) 140-pound bout at Foxwoods Casino at 9 tonight.
