EAST PROVIDENCE – Someone turned the wind machine down to low and Mother Nature dropped a bit of rain on Wannamoisett Country Club’s dry greens and all of a sudden the best players in this year’s Northeast Amateur field began to make some birdies.

Not a whole lot, mind you. LSU’s Stewart Jolly made four birdies en route to his second straight round of 67 on Thursday, giving him a three-shot lead at the halfway point over Mercer University grad Hans Reimers, who shot par 69 in the second round.

PROVIDENCE – After several years of watching Rhode Island high school boys’ basketball crown one undisputed state champion and do so with mostly positive reviews, the girls’ hoops community is officially prepared to follow suit.

EAST PROVIDENCE — Using a steady wind as its most effective punch, Wannamoisett Country Club more than held its own on Wednesday in the first round of the 53rd Northeast Amateur Invitational.

Only five of the 87 contestants broke par with medalist honors going to LSU junior Stewart Jolly, who teed off last and came home first, birdieing his final two holes for a two-under par round of 67.

Four players tied for second with 68s – UNLV’s Kurt Kitayama, Purdue’s Adam Schenk, Mississippi’s Blake Morris and Mercer University grad Hans Reimers.

PawSox excited to be a part of Jeffrey Osborne Celebrity All-Star Softball Classic

June 17, 2014

PAWTUCKET – It’s not unusual for the Pawtucket Red Sox organization to schedule a summertime event at McCoy Stadium while the primary tenants are off waging International League wars at another team’s ballpark. Through the years, McCoy has opened its doors to headline performers such as Bob Dylan and the Dropkick Murphys to welcoming Team USA Baseball.

McGair: Cumberland's Dante Baldelli out to create his own McCoy Stadium magic

June 16, 2014

PAWTUCKET — Walking into McCoy Stadium didn’t seem quite as daunting to Dante Baldelli. Never mind that he’s a precocious 16-year-old who on the surface has some big shoes to fill following in a certain big brother’s footsteps.

Call it a case of what happens when baseball and family serve as parallel threads.

Punchless PawSox fall to Charlotte 2-1 despite pitching performances

June 15, 2014

PAWTUCKET – Despite an early lead and a dominating five-inning performance from Felix Doubront (see related story), the PawSox couldn’t close out Charlotte on Father’s Day.

Left-hander Drake Britton came on in the ninth with Pawtucket guarding a 1-0 lead they had held since their first turn at bat. Britton got the Knights’ Matt Davidson to foul out to first to start the inning, but yielded a ground single to left to Matt Tuiasosopo. The Sox then caught a break as Tyler Saladino botched a sacrifice bunt attempt and fouled out to catcher Christian Vazquez.

PawSox’ Boles, Shaw express gratitude for having pro baseball-experienced dads show them the way

June 14, 2014

PAWTUCKET – Professional baseball was a way of life for Kevin Boles and Travis Shaw long before they reached their respective posts with the Pawtucket Red Sox.

Both have their fathers to thank for lighting the way, giving them a model for understanding the game’s finer points. There’s no substitute for having a dad who understands the baseball culture because he’s lived and experienced it.

June 13, 2014

PAWTUCKET – At least Clay Buchholz’ trip to McCoy Stadium was not a complete washout – no pun intended, considering the deluge that blanketed the area all day Friday.
