Some danced around with teammates, others issued hugs to parents while a few gathered around the one holding the annual Thanksgiving Day trophy to study the history behind it.

McGair: Despite playoff ban, Tolman football team leaves a legacy for others to follow

November 28, 2014

PAWTUCKET – The sight of a quarterback taking a knee comes at the end of the game when the outcome is no longer in doubt – in football parlance it’s commonly referred to as the genuflect offense.

When Tolman High was dealt a one-year playoff ban by the Interscholastic League Principals’ Committee on Athletics for a brief on-field skirmish in 2013, the 2014 team could have easily found itself taking a season-long kneel down.

CENTRAL FALLS  –  During preseason workouts in August, some high school football coaches already know that their teams – based on numbers, talent, seasons played together, knowledge of their systems, etc. – will earn a playoff berth.

In fact, there are a few who figure their clubs, barring massive injuries, will claim a spot in their divisional Super Bowl.

High school hockey | Lincoln solves 'Riel' coaching issue with familiar face

November 24, 2014

LINCOLN – Newborn Colin Joseph Riel doesn't know it yet, but he will down the road: The same month he came into this world, his grandfather – Lt. Col. Denis Riel of the R.I. National Guard – replaced his dad as the Lincoln High boys' ice hockey head coach.

It's a long story, but the eldest Riel decided to keep the role in the family a few weeks ago, and his sons, Jim and Garrett – not to mention the entire LHS community – couldn't be happier. The Lions will maintain familiarity with their mentors.

High school football | Will Thanksgiving games go off as scheduled?

November 24, 2014

PAWTUCKET – For Shea High grid coach Dino Campopiano and his area brethren, it was business as usual Monday afternoon and evening.

He and his team conducted a practice under the dark, cloudy skies at the Max Read Field athletic complex in preparation of hosting archrival Tolman in a Division II crossover showdown at 7 p.m., Wednesday, despite the fact several meteorologists have forecast miserably wet and/or snowy weather through the Thanksgiving holiday.
