Collette Vacations cooled off by Navigant Credit Union

June 29, 2011

PAWTUCKET – Navigant Credit Union Post 85 found a way to cool off red-hot Collette Vacations Post 79.
The Woonsocket-based club seems to have caught a little fire, too.
Navigant went to work early against its Pawtucket foe on Wednesday night, scoring three runs in the top of the first. The bats kept going from there as Post 85 left Max Read Field with an 8-1 victory over Collette in Senior American Legion action.

PawSox's Williams sees hike in velocity, at age 35

June 28, 2011

PAWTUCKET — Randy Williams is a bit of late bloomer. In his case, that’s meant to serve as a compliment.
Normally you don’t associate a 35-year-old with a mid 90s fastball, but you do with Williams. Add to that the fact that the Texas native throws left-handed and suddenly there’s intrigue – the kind that suggests a return trip to the major leagues is closer than it appeared at the start of the season.
“A lefty who throws 95? I would,” said PawSox pitching coach Rich Sauveur when asked if Williams is someone who falls in the “worth watching” category. “He’s got power stuff.”

Cumberland American blasts Cumberland National

June 28, 2011

CUMBERLAND — There was a lot of talk last year that the upcoming Cumberland American All-Star team had potential to be something special this season, especially after the latest batch captured the state title for 11-year-olds.
Two games into the District 4 Major Division Tournament, Cumberland American is proving it just may have what it takes to advance far this summer.

Pawtucket boxer having Olympic dreams

June 27, 2011

PAWTUCKET --- Toka Kahn-Clary is on the doorstep of a berth on the 2012 U.S. Olympic boxing team.
The 19-year-old Pawtucket fighter sewed up one of the eight spots in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials by copping a silver medal at the USA Boxing National Championships late last week at the Olympic Training Center’s Sports Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Competing in a competitive 132-pound division, Kahn-Clary needed just two victories to clinch a berth in the Team Trials, which will be held from July 31-Aug. 6 at the Mobile Civic Center in Mobile, Ala.

Tough time to be undrafted free agent in NFL

June 26, 2011

Let’s break away from the daily grind and wrap our minds around the following hypothetical scenario.
It’s April 2011 and the NFL Draft – the one piece of business green-lighted during the labor dispute – is taking place. Emotion is a universal language at these types of events, from the tension of waiting to hear your name called to a sense of relief once it is. In a split second the clenching of fists and sweaty palms give way to a smile, the realization that your long sought-after dream has come true.

New England Country Club is a hidden jewel

June 26, 2011

BELLINGHAM – New England Country Club is a hidden jewel among public golf courses in the Blackstone Valley.
“We’re located just on the edge of Woonsocket,” said golf pro Mark Copithorne. “In fact, part of our second hole is in Woonsocket, behind the Sears store on Diamond Hill Road. When I first came here, I couldn’t believe you could be driving through Woonsocket and then within three blocks you are in this wooded area where a championship course was built.”

Chili Davis compares '11 Red Sox, '98 Yankees

June 25, 2011

The 1998 New York Yankees were a take-no-prisoners juggernaut, a team not to be trifled with. Perched high above in their pinstriped ivory tower, those Yanks achieved a 125-win season (including playoffs) that culminated in outstanding style – a World Series title.

Lincoln rolls past East Woonsocket in district opener

LINCOLN — If Lincoln was playing nervous during Saturday’s District 4 tournament opener, it sure didn’t show.
The perennial power looked right at home – literally and figuratively – in coasting to a 10-0 mercy-rule victory over East Woonsocket at Hien Field, the first of four pool play games for each team.
Seeking its 16th District IV title in the past 21 years, a stretch of dominance that dates back to 1991, Lincoln pounded out eight hits and capitalized on sloppy defense from East Woonsocket, which committed five errors.

Uihlein wins Northeast Amateur going away

June 25, 2011

EAST PROVIDENCE — Peter Uihlein looked a little bit like Secretariat running away from the field while galloping to a tournament-record score of 261 on Saturday en route to victory in the 50th Annual Northeast Amateur Invitational.
Uihlein opened up a six-shot lead midway through the final nine before bogeying No. 17 and finishing at 15-under for the tournament, breaking Dan Woltman’s existing mark of 11-under set in 2009.
Runnerup James White also broke the tournament record with a score of 262. The Georgia Tech rising senior played one group ahead of Uihlein and closed with a 64.

Guthrie leads by a stroke at Northeast Amateur

June 24, 2011

EAST PROVIDENCE — Golf is never as easy as Luke Guthrie made it look when he shot a tournament record round of 61 in the opening round of the 50th Northeast Amateur on Wednesday.
Guthrie came back to earth during Thursday’s second round, shooting a 71 that left him with a one-shot lead over Georgia Tech’s Kyle Scott and Florida State’s Michael Hebert heading into today’s third round.
“There are so many great players in this tournament,” Guthrie said after finishing early. “I expect by the end of the day, I might not even have the lead.”
