McGair: Billy Baron considering all options; Rakim Sanders to suit up for Warriors' Summer League team

July 1, 2012

For someone who has been swept up by the winds of change on more than one occasion, Billy Baron finds himself in no particular hurry to make a decision.
Rather than rush to judgment and settle on what will be his third college stop, Baron is adhering to a wait-and-see approach regarding his impending landing destination. A female supporter who engaged in pleasant small talk with Baron on Saturday caught a glimpse of where his collective psyche stands.

Pawtucket's Kahn-Clary, Pereira land 2nd-round TKOs

July 1, 2012

PROVIDENCE - Toka Kahn-Clary supplied the speed and Diego Pereira provided the power, and because of that, both Pawtucket fighters were able to score crowd-pleasing, second-round TKOs on this past weekend’s Big Six Entertainment “Takeover” show at the Rhode Island Convention Center.
Kahn-Clary, the former National Golden Gloves champion who was making his much-anticipated pro debut in front of his local fans, family members, and friends, didn’t disappoint anyone as the junior lightweight put an end to Jonathan Caban’s night with 11 seconds left in the second round.

PawSox' Germano has options to consider

June 29, 2012

PAWTUCKET – Justin Germano knows a decision lies ahead. Come Saturday night, the right-hander and de facto ace of Pawtucket’s pitching staff will take the mound in Lehigh Valley.
The following day, Germano will choose whether to stick with the PawSox for the rest of the season or seek employment with another club. If it’s the latter, Germano – named to the International League All-Star team earlier in the week – would have no shortage of suitors.

Following in the footsteps: That’s the aim for this year’s Cumberland American squad

June 28, 2012

CUMBERLAND — Not quite a year ago, Bruce Stanford and his son, Jordan, video-recorded the first game of the Cumberland American Little League Major Division All-Stars’ first foray into the Little League World Series in Williamsport.
He did so because he wanted to “do it right.”
Stanford and son had placed a big screen in the backyard of his Arnold Mills neighborhood home, waited for dusk and projected the taped version for family and friends.

Podsednik set to return to game action with PawSox

June 28, 2012

PAWTUCKET — For Scott Podsednik, the left groin strain he suffered 11 days ago couldn’t have come at a worse time.
Podsednik, who had returned to the big leagues after a year’s absence, was batting .387 in 19 games with the Boston Red Sox and giving them a much- needed boost in the outfield after they lost the likes of Jacoby Ellsbury, Carl Crawford, Darnell McDonald, Cody Ross, and Ryan Sweeney to injuries.

Local football stars primed for Governor’s Cup

June 28, 2012

CRANSTON — In many ways, the tenor of these Governor’s Cup clashes, pitting the top high school football seniors in Rhode Island and Connecticut, resembles that of a typical “big brother, little brother” exchange.

Newcomer Stewart helps PawSox stop bleeding

June 27, 2012

PAWTUCKET — The newest member of the Pawtucket Red Sox played a major role in snapping the team’s third-longest losing streak in club history on Wednesday night at McCoy Stadium.
Starting pitcher Zach Stewart, who was acquired by the Boston Red Sox in Sunday’s trade with the Chicago White Sox for Kevin Youkilis, turned in a splendid outing to help the PawSox defeat the Charlotte Knights, 5-1, and grab their first victory after nine straight losses.

PawSox place four on I.L. All-Star team

June 27, 2012

PAWTUCKET — Mauro Gomez earned a spot on the International League all-star team last season, the third straight year he earned a midseason honor.
Ryan Lavarnway was a Carolina League all-star in 2010, and Pedro Ciriaco picked up his last minor-league all-star honor three years ago in the Southern League.
That being said, when was the last time Justin Germano, the fourth member of the Pawtucket Red Sox named to the I.L.’s all-star team early Wednesday afternoon, selected to a squad?
“(The) 2002 (season) was my one and only,” he said with a smile. “It’s been a while.”

Charlotte hands PawSox ninth straight defeat

June 26, 2012

PAWTUCKET — Perhaps the only good news coming out of McCoy Stadium on Tuesday night was this: Catcher Ryan Lavarnway extended his consecutive-game hit streak to eight with a bloop single to left in the fifth.
After that? There wasn’t much for the 6,009 in attendance to get excited about, as the Pawtucket Red Sox dropped a dismal 8-0 decision to the Charlotte Knights.
In the process, Pawtucket’s losing streak increased to nine straight games, and it’s now dangerously close to eclipsing its second-longest skid in club history; that came between Aug. 12-20, 2009.

Newcomer Stewart anxious to start with PawSox

June 26, 2012

PAWTUCKET — New PawSox acquisition Zach Stewart admitted the last 48 hours have been a whirlwind of emotion.
After discovering he and Chicago White Sox teammate Brent Lillibridge had been traded for Boston third baseman/first baseman Kevin Youkilis on Saturday night, he took care of some family business, and didn’t arrive at his new McCoy Stadium digs.
He didn’t arrive at the park until about 4:30 p.m., met with manager Arnie Beyeler and pitching coach Rich Sauveur, exchanged pleasantries with some teammates and walked out onto the turf for some stretching and long tosses.
