November 27, 2012

Sports writer
PROVIDENCE – At one point during the second half of Tuesday night's game against Holy Cross, Providence head coach Ed Cooley turned around and urged the crowd – announced at 4,596 – to get behind his Friars.
After his team ran past the Crusaders in 61-42 fashion, Cooley went out of his way to make sure the Friar Faithful shows a little more enthusiasm when Mississippi State pays a visit to The Dunk on Saturday afternoon. The game will air on ESPNU.

It seems like only yesterday that high school football teams were preparing for the season under the hot August sun. Now we only have one weekend left in October and with it very precious little time remaining in the regular season.

McGair: Taking stock of potential PawSox call-ups to Boston

September 19, 2012

Sports writer
DURHAM, N.C. – Now comes the obvious question. With the PawSox’ season officially over, will any players get called up to Boston?
Two members of the Governors’ Cup-clinching ball club were informed following Tuesday’s 10-3 loss in the Triple-A National Championship that they will be spending the balance of the Red Sox’ season with the parent club. When Boston opens a home series against the playoff-chasing Baltimore Orioles on Friday, third baseman Danny Valencia and reliever Pedro Beato are expected to be included on the active roster.

McGair: PawSox upbeat after dropping Triple-A Championship

September 18, 2012

Sports writer
DURHAM, N.C. – The mood in the clubhouse did not match up with a team that had just dropped a 10-3 decision in the Triple-A National Championship game.
Instead, music blasted from Nelson Figueora’s iPad, tunes that by no means were intended to sooth the savage beast. The PawSox understand that Tuesday’s loss to the Reno Aces does little to diminish what this team had already accomplished heading into the week – that of capturing the franchise’s third Governors’ Cup.

McGair: PawSox manager calls Lucchino's visit to McCoy Stadium 'neat'

September 5, 2012

Sports writer
PAWTUCKET – You always want to make a good impression whenever a member of hierarchy stops by, which the Pawtucket Red Sox were able to do Wednesday night courtesy of a 7-4 win against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in Game One of their best-of-five opening-round Governor’s Cup series.
With Red Sox president & CEO Larry Lucchino present at McCoy Stadium, the PawSox were able to put their best foot forward and demonstrate winning baseball – two traits that have been MIA for a vast majority of Boston’s 2012 season.

McGair: Middlebrooks remains as active as ever despite season-ending injury

August 21, 2012

Sports writer
BOSTON – Even a season-ending wrist injury hasn’t completely dampened Will Middlebrooks’ spirit.
There was Middlebrooks on Tuesday afternoon, stationed at third base during batting practice as Boston third-base coach Jerry Royster sent groundball after groundball in the player’s direction. All appeared normal until Middlebrooks took the ball and gently flipped it off to the side.

Rich Hill to resume rehab schedule with the PawSox Thursday; why Jose Iglesias was a late scratch Monday

August 20, 2012

Sports writer
PAWTUCKET – As he walked out of McCoy Stadium Monday night, Rich Hill mapped out what the next few days will cover as far as the left reliever’s rehab schedule.
Carrying a Red Sox equipment bag, Hill mentioned that he’ll workout in Boston Tuesday and Wednesday before rejoining the PawSox Thursday in Charlotte where the primary focus will be pitching on consecutive days.

McGair: Closer or setting up? Bailey uncertain of role upon rejoining Red Sox

August 8, 2012

Sports writer
PAWTUCKET – Sprinkle in a few more spotless outings on top of the 1-2-3 sixth inning Andrew Bailey tossed for the PawSox Wednesday night and it’s hard not to imagine him returning at some point during Boston’s 10-game, three-city road trip, which gets under Thursday night in Cleveland.
The question is what capacity will Bailey serve upon joining the Red Sox. Will he close games – the primary reason why Boston general manager Ben Cherington acquired the 28-year-old in the first place – or serve as a bridge to Alfredo Aceves, the current incumbent?

McGair: Carpenter hopes to pitch in back-to-back games for PawSox: what hitting HR No. 20 means for Mauro Gomez

July 16, 2012

Sports writer
PAWTUCKET – In Chris Carpenter’s eyes, the fact that he’s rehabbing in Triple A following previous stops at the lower levels does not change the equation.
“Every time I go out there, I do so with the same mindset, which is attack the hitters,” said Carpenter following his PawSox debut Monday night, which consisted of one scoreless inning on 10 pitches, five for strikes. “I feel like I’ve done that at every level so far and was able to do it again (against the Chiefs).”

McGair: Struggles continue for Bard; Podsednik to play OF for PawSox on Saturday

June 29, 2012

Sports writer
PAWTUCKET – It doesn’t get any lower if you’re Daniel Bard.
The embattled Pawtucket Red Sox reliever added to his misery Friday night, lasting all of one-third of an inning in the PawSox’ 5-2 loss to the Charlotte Knights, a defeat that lowered the curtain on a cover-your-eyes 1-7 homestand. Bard faced seven Charlotte batters and tossed 26 pitches, nine for strikes.

This marks just the second time that both All-Star managers are making a return trip to the event (2003, Marc Bombard and Rick Sweet).

McGair: One step at a time for Daniel Bard folllowing his first outing with the PawSox

June 8, 2012

Sports writer
PAWTUCKET – Here’s what Daniel Bard had to say following his one-inning outing for the Pawtucket Red Sox Friday night:

Bard’s general reaction to the three runs he allowed on 25 pitches, 16 for strikes:
“The best thing about throwing down here (in the minors) is that you can kind of throw out the results and not worry about wins and losses too much. I’m trying some tweaks mechanically and I think they were really good on some pitches and that’s what I was looking for, to get some feel.

Iglesias to the DL; Ex-Cub Prior officially joins the PawSox

June 1, 2012

Per the PawSox:

McGair: Talking football with New England QB Ryan Mallett

May 21, 2012

Sports writer
Besides talking about his childhood friend and current Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks in a piece that ran in Monday’s edition (here it is in case you missed it:’-qb-mallett-elated-middlebrooks-can-officially-call-himself-big-leaguer), Patriots third-string quarterback Ryan Mallett weighed in about a few pigskin-related topics.

On what Mallett’s offseason dance card consisted of leading up to the start of Organized Team Activities:
