PROVIDENCE – As much the sight of former PC baseball standout John McDonald bringing out the World Series trophy to where PawSox President Mike Tamburro and General Manager Lou Schwechheimer were standing at center court was cause for celebration, there was probably a lot of steam coming out of the Providence College locker room.

PAWTUCKET -- Once again, the winds of change have swept through the manager's office at McCoy Stadium.

Tuesday saw Gary DiSarcina leave to become the third-base coach for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, a franchise that the Massachusetts native is quite familiar with. He played 12 years for the Angels and served as a special assistant to the team's general manager during the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

“To get these kind of moments, that is what it’s all about. For me, I’m lucky enough it worked out. I don’t ever go up there with the mindset ‘This is what is going to happen.’ It seems to be happening that way and I’m very fortunate to get that opportunity again tonight with the bases loaded and open up the game a little bit.

BOSTON – If Jarrod Saltalamacchia could turn back the hands of time to the seventh inning of Game 2 of the World Series, the Red Sox catcher would.

The double steal that St. Louis executed with Pete Kozma swiping third base and John Jay taking third base was aided when Saltalamacchia dropped the ball on the transfer.

PROVIDENCE – On Saturday, January 25, Providence College will honor three of its all-time greatest basketball players. Former Friar men's basketball players Kevin Stacom '74 and Joe Hassett '77 and women's basketball player Tracy Lis '92 will be honored at the men's and women's home games that day as banners will be unveiled with their names and numbers (Stacom #25, Hassett #10 and Lis #22).

Brock Holt’s two-run single in the top of the eighth inning erased a 1-0 deficit and enabled the Pawtucket Red Sox to come away with a 2-1 victory over the Durham Bulls on Tuesday night in the opener of their best-of-five Governors’ Cup championship series at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
The series will continue tonight back at Durham, and after an off day on Thursday, the defending International League champion PawSox will host the rest of the series, with Game 3 taking place on Friday at McCoy Stadium.

PAWTUCKET – Quintin Berry wasn’t supposed to be with the Pawtucket Red Sox for very long. The fact that the outfielder learned Saturday night that he will join the Red Sox on Sunday proved just that.

-- Though he didn’t name specific names, manager Gary DiSarcina did say that he fully expects to lose players on Sunday, the first day that MLB rosters expand from 25 to 40.
“I would think so. Probably one from each position,” DiSarcina said. “(Red Sox manager) John (Farrell) wants to have weapons on his bench. We’ll see what happens.”
DiSarcina noted that more light figures to be shed on said topic following Saturday’s regular season home finale against Syracuse.

PROVIDENCE – Friday saw Providence College Head Coach Ed Cooley announce the 2013-14 men's basketball team's non-league schedule on Friday.

The non-league schedule is highlighted by a home game and season opener versus ACC foe Boston College on Friday, November 8 (6 p.m.). The Friars will play key non-conference road games versus SEC opponents Kentucky on Sunday, December 1 (8 p.m.) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y. and Vanderbilt on Friday, November 22 at 6:30 p.m. ET at the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam.

PAWTUCKET – PawSox skipper Gary DiSarcina found out that reliever Brandon Lyon had plans to make good on the opt-out in his contract while signing autographs on the concourse as part of poster night at McCoy Stadium Thursday.

“We knew his day was coming and he chose to take his out and see what opportunities are out there,” said DiSarcina following his club’s 6-2 loss to Norfolk on Thursday night at McCoy Stadium.

LINCOLN – After weeks of pondering his baseball future, Nick Zammarelli decided late Wednesday night that he is heading to Elon University.

The recent Lincoln High graduate made up his mind on the same night that Boston Red Sox scouts Ray Fagnant and Quincy Boyd were on hand to see Zammarelli take batting practice at North Providence High School and in Westerly as North Providence Post 29 took on Gordon Greene Post 27 in R.I. American Legion action.

Clearly, the scout that spoke about Xander Bogaerts is a big-time admirer, the former basing his opinion on what he saw when the latter was in Double-A Portland earlier this season. The Red Sox echoed the scout’s sentiment when they officially promoted the 20-year-old to Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday.
