CUMBERLAND: Joseph M. Richard, 85, of Diamond Hill Rd, passed away November 3, 2010. He was the husband of Theresa (Robideau) Richard, they would have celebrated their 63rd anniversary on November 27th.
Born in Central Falls,he was a son of the late Raoul and Lillian (Berger) Richard.
He had been employed as an electrician at the Newport Navy Base, and previously Natick Labs and at the Navy base at Quonset Point. He was a Navy Veteran of WWII service as a Chief Petty officer first class from 1942 to 1946

Allan had been employed as a computer programming analyst for many years and was an Army Veteran.
Besides his wife he is survived by 7 children, Valerie, Allan, Rebecca, Jarrod, Erica, Tonia and John, many grandchildren and great grandchildren, two brothers, Charles McCrorie and Dr. Edward McCrorie and several nieces and nephews.

Shea tops Portsmouth in soccer playoff opener

PAWTUCKET --- When Portsmouth High took a 1-0 lead just 54 seconds into Wednesday afternoon’s Division I quarterfinal-round contest with Shea High and held it into the final moments of the first half, the Raiders and their fans were quietly fearing the worst.
That’s because in last year’s Division II quarterfinals, the Raiders suffered a stunning 2-1 loss to Lincoln High that saw the Lions draw first blood, and despite being dominated for most of the game, escape Pawtucket with the upset victory.

PawSox manager has fond memories of Sparky Anderson

You never forget your first big league manager – no matter where the game of baseball takes you. That’s how Torey Lovullo is choosing to remember the wisdom and guidance former Detroit and Cincinnati manger Sparky Anderson imparted on his pro career. Anderson passed away on Thursday from complications of dementia in Thousand Oaks, Calif. He was 76.
“I’m saddened because he was an influential man in so many areas,” said Lovullo, Pawtucket’s manager, when reached early Thursday night.

Chafee wins governorship

PROVIDENCE — Rhode Island has another Governor Chafee.
Independent Lincoln Chafee outpolled a seven-man field Tuesday to win the office his father, the late Sen. John H. Chafee, held more than 40 years ago. He is the first candidate to win the governorship as an Independent.
“Roger Williams would be proud,” Chafee said in his acceptance speech, referring to man who founded of the colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations in 1663.

Providence Mayor David Cicilline bucked a sweeping nationwide Republican trend Tuesday to narrowly win the 1st Congressional District seat being vacated by Patrick Kennedy,
In besting a surprisingly strong showing by Republican John Loughlin, 51 to 45, Cicilline becomes the first mayor of Providence to successfully win higher office since Dennis J. Roberts was elected governor in 1950. Also seeking the seat were Independents Kenneth Capalbo, who got 4 percent of the vote and Gregory Raposa, who picked up less than 1 percent,

WOONSOCKET -- Last year’s Division II Super Bowl championship season is a distant memory for players on the 2010 Woonsocket High squad.
“That’s gone,” head coach Carnell Henderson admitted on Tuesday night. “We were a senior-heavy team last year. The kids on this year’s team feel like they were recipients of a championship last year. They want to win one for themselves.”
The Villa Novans are 5-1 with one game left in the regular season. That one loss came against unbeaten Tolman by a 6-0 score back in mid-September.

PAWTUCKET - Hrad H. Zolmian, M.D., 96, of McNeill Street, Carthage, North Carolina and formerly ofPequot Road, Pawtucket died Sunday, October 31, 2010 at home in North Carolina. He was the husband of the late Ruth (Notley) Zolmian and the father of the late Rod S. Zolmian.
Born in Providence, he was a son of the late George and Hanoushag (Anderson)Zooloomian.
Dr. Zolmian was a physician in the Blackstone Valley for many years retiring in November 1993. He was a 1936 graduate of Brown University and a 1940 graduate of Harvard University Medical School.

PAWTUCKET — Two great names from Tolman High football history were reunited on Monday evening for the taping of Bill Mulholland’s “Good Sports” cable access television show.
Larry Caswell and Frank Geiselman shared a stage, talking about their successful careers as quarterback and wide receiver, respectively, at both Tolman and the University of Rhode Island.

Lion girls top Novans, win share of division title

WOONSOCKET — For Lincoln High, Monday’s task was as straightforward as you’ll get. A win against Woonsocket High meant the Lions would clinch no worse than a share of the Division II-North crown.
Mission accomplished as Lincoln, buoyed by two goals from Jillian DeSimone, took care of business with a 4-0 win over Woonsocket at Barry Field. The Lions finish the regular season 12-1-5. The Villa Novans completed their first – and possibly last – in Division II with a 1-17 mark.

City ready to go to the polls
