E.P. cagers surprise La Salle

EAST PROVIDENCE – East Providence played a “full 32 minutes,” in the words of coach Alex Butler, en route to a 56-43 victory over Division I-North leader La Salle on Friday night.
Joe Carnevale hit five three-point field goals while scoring 23 points for the Townies, who improved to 3-5 in Division I with the win. Derek Andreoli added 10 points for the Townies.
La Salle fell to 6-2 in league play with the loss.

CUMBERLAND --– For the past four decades, the face of Cumberland High swimming has been Bruce Calvert. During his long tenure as the Clippers’ head coach, he produced an abundance of all-state athletes and a combined 13 state crowns (boy and girls).
Calvert no longer patrols the CHS pool, retiring from his longtime post in November only a few months after doing the same as the school’s aquatic director.

JOHNSTON - Alice Pendlebury, 103 of Old Pocassett Road, passed away Thursday in Briarcliffe Nursing Home.
Born in Pawtucket, she was the daughter of the late William and Margaret (Hargreaves) Pendlebury.
She was employed for many years at the former Standard Braid Co., Pawtucket.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Margaret Csisar, Bernice Colvin, Rhoda Swanton, Theresa Pendlebury, Florence and Ada Filippi,Beatrice Jubainville, James Pendlebury, John Pendlebury and Gen. William Pendlebury.

She is survived by a daughter, Linda A. Auclair of Moosup, CT, three sons, Michael J. Flynn and John W. Flynn, both of Pawtucket and Brien O. Flynn of Jamaica Plain, a sister, Kathleen Grimes of Mays Landing, N.J., eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Born in Holyoke, MA she was a daughter of the late John and Carolina (Rynasziewicz) Pysz. She lived in Pawtucket for 34 years.
Before retiring she and her late husband owned and operated the former Sam's C.C. of Central Falls.

CUMBERLAND - George A. Walsh, 78, of Pound Road died Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at Rhode Island Hospital, Providence. He was the beloved husband of Loretta C. (Kiernan) Walsh.
Born in Pawtucket, a son of the late Arthur and Madeline (Dooley) Walsh, he had lived in Cumberland for the past 31 years.
Mr. Walsh worked at GTE Corporation, Central Falls for 45 years, retiring as supervisor in 1994.
He was a Korean War Army veteran.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one brother, William J. Walsh of North Attleboro, MA; and several nieces and nephews.

In Div. II basketball, parity is prevalent

By early next week, basketball teams statewide will have reached the midway point of their league seasons.
For some boys' squads, the writing’s on the wall that their seasons will come to a close some time in mid-February. But for several others, including a plethora of area teams, the postseason is clearly within reach with still plenty of basketball to be played in the final month of league competition.

Spooner named new School Committee chairman

PAWTUCKET — Two former School Committee chairmen, who were elected back to the committee in November, have been chosen by their fellow board members to assume leadership roles once again.
By unanimous vote Tuesday night, the newly installed School Committee named Raymond Spooner as chairman and Alan Tenreiro as deputy chairman. The board also chose to retain school secretary Diana Liss, who is Spooner’s sister, as its clerk.

He was the husband of the late Irene (Neveu) Boucher. They had been married 45 years. Born in Central Falls, he was the son of the late Alfred Boucher.
He served in the US Marine Corps from 1957-1962. Normand worked for Lebanon Knitting Mills for 15 yrs., Worcester Textile for 23 yrs. and Benny's Warehouse for 10 plus yrs.

CUMBERLAND - Yvonne Smith, 68, of Dexter Street, passed away Tuesday, January 11, at home surrounded by her loving family. She was the beloved wife of Edward J. Smith.
Born in Providence, she was the daughter of the late Alcide and Estelle (Ouellette) Plante. She was a life-long resident of Cumberland.
Mrs. Smith was employed as an accounts payable clerk for Teknor Apex for many years, and was the owner of the former Smitty's Restaurant which was situated on Broad Street in Cumberland.
