Tolman iced in playoff opener

CRANSTON --- Cranston East had the numbers, the size, and fewer mistakes than Tolman on Friday night, and that helped the ’Bolts seize the first game of their best-of-three Division III quarterfinal-round series with the Tigers.
Cranston East scored twice in a 13-second span in the second period to claim a 3-0 command and held off a late Tolman comeback to secure a 5-2 triumph at the Cranston Vets Arena.

SRA cagers gain second life

PAWTUCKET - Edward A. McDonald, 78, of Pawtucket, passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2011. He was the husband of the late Agnes (Adam) McDonald. Born in Pawtucket, he was the son of the late Joseph and Edna (Johnson) McDonald. Mr McDonald was a lifelong resident of the city. He graduated from the East High School (Tolman) in 1952, where he was Swim Boy of the Year. He was a maintenance man for the former Haskell Co. of Pawtucket and later for the former Holiday of Attleboro, MA for several years before retiring. He was an air force veteran of the Korean War.

LINCOLN - Robert Leo Maitland, 91, of Lincoln died peacefully on Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011 at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center after a two month illness.
Born in Pawtucket to Robert J. Maitland and Ellen (Fogarty) Maitland, he lived in Lincoln most of his life.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy M. (Walsh) Maitland and their two daughters, Joan E. Ayotte and Mary Ann Mayer.

Head of State Police resigns

SCITUATE — Hinting broadly that he may soon return to public life, perhaps as a political candidate, State Police Col. Brendan Doherty announced Thursday that he is retiring effective April 1.
Both Doherty and Gov. Lincoln Chafee’s office denied that friction between Doherty and Chafee — who were at odds over the Providence Police Department’s decision to opt out of the federal Secure Communities Program — led to Doherty’s seemingly abrupt decision to step down.

Defensive-minded Davies tops Shea in playoffs

PAWTUCKET — Davies Tech baffled Shea High with its matchup zone defense on Wednesday evening en route to a 32-25 victory over the Raiders in a Division III quarterfinal-round playoff contest.
The Patriots trailed 16-10 at halftime, then went on a 15-2 run to take a 25-18 lead with 3:58 left in the game. Shea’s only two points during the first 12 minutes of the second half came on free throws.

PAWTUCKET - Dominateur C. Bernier Jr. of Pawtucket, RI died on February 28, 2011. He was the son of the late Mr. And Mrs. Dominateur C. Bernier Sr.
He was born May 23, 1942 in Central Falls, RI. He worked as a printer for 15 years at Foxon Packaging in Providence, RI and was in the taxi business for 40 years.
He is survived by his children, Brian Bernier, Michele Gendron, Dominateur Bernier III, Tonya Peckham and Sean Bernier. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and 3 sisters, Teresa Watts, Irene Bernier, and Marie Lomax.

Husband and best friend to Marjorie DiOrio; the beloved son of Juliette (Santagata) Cardogno, and the late, Frank DiOrio Sr. A loving father to his children, Jason, Michael and Christy DiOrio, and Brian Rector. An inspiring brother to his two sisters Donna Sieta and Valerie Cachiotto. Frank also leaves behind 2 beautiful grandchildren, Isabella and Ava.
A retired custom car builder, Frank was a master carpenter who enjoyed restoring and renovating old homes.

PAWTUCKET: Agnes A. Cleveland, 77, of Carnation St, passed at the Memorial Hospital, Pawtucket after a long bout with cancer. She was the beloved wife of the late Robert N. Cleveland.
Born in Cumberland, daughter of the late Henri and Rosanna (Frechette) L'Heureux. Agnes lived in Pawtucket most of her life.
She was a supervisor at Interpak for 20 years before retiring.
She was a former treasurer of the Burns Manor Association and volunteered at Darlington Assisted Living Center in Pawtucket. Agnes liked going on trips and to concerts.

EAST PROVIDENCE - Robert M. Thomas, 95, of East Providence died Tuesday at the Philip Hulitar Center. He was the husband of the late Jean (Gordon) Thomas. They were married for 60 years.
Born in St. Louis, MO, the son of the late Rev. Albert C. Thomas and Minnie(Mansfield) Thomas, he lived in Rumford for over 60 years. He graduated from Durfee High School in Fall River in 1933, Moses Brown School in 1934, and Brown University in 1938.

Cumberland Police: Home invasion suspects stole guns

CUMBERLAND — The 66-year-old victim of last week's violent home invasion at 124 Overhill Road in Cumberland has been identified as Harvey O. Salvas, who also is a staff member of the Rhode Island Governor's Commission on Disabilities.
Salvas is the commission's state Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) coordinator specializing in accessibility and assistive technology. He is also a former building official in Cumberland.

Senate committee OKs Board of Regents nominees

PROVIDENCE – Three of Gov. Lincoln Chafee’s nominees to the Board of Regents, including chairman-designate George Caruolo, won approval from the Senate Education Committee on split votes Tuesday.
After enduring extensive grilling from committee members on his opinion of Commissioner Deborah Gist and several of the reforms she has championed, on his potential conflict of interest in simultaneously being regents chairman and a lobbyist for the Twin River gambling casino and not losing the $75 million in federal Race to the Top funds Rhode Island was awarded last year.
