Fire displaces five in city

PAWTUCKET — A fire of unknown origin heavily damaged a two-family house at 442 Pawtucket Avenue early Tuesday morning and forced the five occupants to seek alternative lodging.
According to Pawtucket Fire Capt. Steven Parent, who is also the city's fire marshal, the two-alarm fire broke out shortly after midnight. When the first engine company arrived, firefighters found the two front porches of the house fully engulfed in flames and the air was thick with heavy smoke. A short time later, the entire front porch collapsed off of the house, he said.

Pawtucket Hall of Fame inducts six members

PAWTUCKET — Six individuals who made a positive difference in the city over the years were inducted Friday night into the 2011 Pawtucket Hall of Fame. Also honored was a deceased Civil War veteran, Capt. Levi Tower, who was chosen as this year's historical inductee.

CUMBERLAND - Irene D. Bergeron, 90 of Cumberland died Sunday at the Oakhill Nursing Home in Pawtucket. Born in Pawtucket she was the daughter of the late Paul and Rose (Gervais) Bergeron.
Prior to her retirement in 1986 she worked for 48 years at Fram Corporation. Irene was an LPN and worked part time at Memorial Hospital and the Red Cross. She was President of the Woman’s Guild at St. Jean the Baptist Church and Treasurer of AARP #610 from 1993 until 2000. She enjoyed traveling and had traveled around the world.

ARIZONA - Rita Blais, 86, of Peoria, Arizona formerly of Pawtucket, RI and Central Falls, RI, passed away on October 8, 2011. She was born on April 1, 1925 in Woonsocket, RI as one of 11 children to John and Mary (Elias) Joseph, and was married to Joseph O. Blais of Central Falls, RI, who preceded her in death in 1975.

SEEKONK - Robert "Bob" Ellis Strom, 93, passed away peacefully while surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, October 6, 2011. He is the beloved husband of Eleanor Edythe (McIntosh) Strom to whom he was married for 63 years; together they resided in Seekonk since 1958. Born in Uxbridge, Massachusetts, he was the son of the late Ellis and Esther (Michelson) Strom.

PAWTUCKET- Alice C. Johnstone 98, formerly of Towers East passed away Sunday October 9, 2011 at Berkshire Place in Providence. She was the beloved wife of the late Francis M. Johnstone.
Born in Central Falls she was a daughter of the late John and Agnes (Kowalec) Stelmach.
Mrs. Johnstone leaves one loving brother Frank Stelmach of Melbourne, FL and several devoted nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Blanche Roderick, Jessie Green, Albert and Andrew Stelmach.

NORTH SMITHFIELD - Reverend Joseph P. Hynes, 85, pastor emeritus of St. Teresa of the Child Jesus Church in Pawtucket, passed away Friday, Oct. 7, 2011 at Saint Antoine Residence, North Smithfield.
Born in Providence, a son of the late Thomas and Mary (Lyons) Hynes. He attended St. Mary School, LaSalle Academy in Providence, also the School of Philip Neri in Boston.

CUMBERLAND - Gertrude M. Jameson, 90 of Cumberland, formerly of Central Falls, died on Oct. 8 at Hospice Care of RI. She was the wife of the late Walter F. Jameson. Daughter of the late Oscar and Marie Rose (Racquier) St. Onge she was born in Central falls and lived there most of her life. She has been a waitress in local restaurants until her retirement several years ago.

PAWTUCKET - Arthur E. DeLange Jr., died at Home & Hospice Care of RI in Providence. He was the beloved husband of Marie (Battista) DeLange, to whom he had been married for 57 years.
Born in the Bronx, NY, a son of Arthur and Anna (O'Connor) DeLange, he had been employed for many years as a printer at various local companies, including the former E.L. Freeman Co. and the J.C. Hall Company of Pawtucket prior to retirement in 1993.

PAWTUCKET - Mary F. (Pardi) Allard, 60, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 8, 2011. She was the beloved wife of the late Leo Allard. Born in Portland, Maine, she was a daughter of the late Anthony and Barbara (Duran) Pardi.
Mary had worked as a Mutual Clerk at Twin River Casino, Lincoln, for several years.
Mary is survived by two brothers, Rocco M. Pardi of Attleboro and Joseph A. Pardi of Pawtucket and several nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Barbara E. Pardi and John E. Pardi both of Pawtucket.

About 150 guests have been invited to attend their wedding next weekend, but Geralyn Hoffman and Larry Ducady aren’t planning on getting too dressed up for their big day.

LINCOLN — Almost a month to the day after the van of her dreams had been stolen from her family home's driveway, Joan Malark hopes and prays that either Lincoln police officers find the vehicle, or the thieves return it.
Life hasn't been the same without it, stated Malark, a 61-year-old Saylesville resident who suffers a great deal of lower leg pain from her bout with multiple sclerosis.

Korean War impacted Pawtucket East's Class of '51

PAWTUCKET – When the Pawtucket East Class of 1951 graduated from high school 60 years ago, many of the young men in the class were impacted by the Korea War that had begun at the end of their junior year.
It was a perilous time for the seniors that year. They had grown up during World War II and now their own war was looming in their lives.

The Times is planning a special salute to area veterans next month in the leadup to Veterans Day.
In order to obtain photos of area veterans, The Times will be holding a special photo session on noon on Friday, Nov. 4. The tentative location is the Cumberland Monastery facility on Route 114.
We will be taking group photos of veterans from the eras of World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan. You do not have to be a combat veteran to participate.

City man is victim of Providence shooting

PROVIDENCE – Providence police continue to search for suspects in the shooting death of Derek M. Taylor, 34, of Pawtucket.
Officers stated Taylor had been driving his van near Miriam Hospital when it suddenly crashed early Friday morning. He later died of a gunshot wound, and police are investigating the death as a homicide. A cousin of Taylor's, Rishaun Taylor, told a local media outlet that he had been shot in the head.

EAST PROVIDENCE – Just seconds after he had concluded his after-school presentation regarding anti-bullying and making the right choices at the Weaver Public Library's Champlin Program Room on Wednesday afternoon, Kevin Robinson was inundated with city schoolchildren clamoring for his autograph.
And why not? Robinson is considered a local hero around these parts. Over the past 15 years, the father of three has captured multiple BMX High-Air medals at the X Games, and also acts as President of the K-ROB Foundation.

SEATLE, WA - Rose C. Asselin died peacefully with family by her side on August 24, 2011 in Seattle WA.
Born the week before the big crash of 1929, Rose was a life time resident of Cumberland. The oldest of 4 children, to help her family she started working at 16 at Corning Glass in Central Falls, while she continued to go to high school during the day. She retired 46 years later, having only worked for one company.
