Tolman-SRA grid matchup on tap Friday

Most folks around Pawtucket are expecting Tolman High to handle crosstown foe St. Raphael Academy with ease on Friday night in their Division II-B opener at Pariseau Field, and those people have their reasons.
They remember last season’s 37-0 regular-season stomping by the Tigers and Tolman’s two-touchdown triumph over the Saints in the playoffs. They know that the Tigers have a seasoned junior- and senior-ladened team and the Saints lost quite a few key players to graduation.

OSTERVILLE, MA - James "Jim" Peacock, 77, longtime resident of Osterville, passed away peacefully Saturday September 3, 2011 at Cape Cod Hospital surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of Claire (Harmon)Peacock for 53 years.
Jim was born in Pawtucket, RI and graduated from Pawtucket West High in 1954 where he was a star football and basketball player and held the school javelin record for many years. He then joined the US Army for 2 years and was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany.

Woonsocket coaching staff pulling together

Carnell Henderson is aware of the burden he’s placed on his Woonsocket assistant coaches. The head coach, who continues to come along after undergoing surgery in early August to repair a torn tendon in quadriceps muscle of his left leg, knows that just like the players have to step up their game whenever there’s an absence, so too does his staff.
The idea is to keep things as close to the status quo as possible until Henderson returns to the sidelines, which he is optimistic will happen this season.

Tenants displaced by fire on Gordon Street

PAWTUCKET — An electrical fire that started in an attic displaced about 13 tenants in a four-unit apartment house at 192 Garden St. early Wednesday morning, fire officials said.
The call for the three-alarm blaze came in at around 5 a.m. According to Fire Capt. Steven Parent, the fire burned through much of the roof and caused extensive smoke and water damage throughout the wood frame house.
All of the tenants were able to escape and no one was injured, although two firefighters had to be treated for heat exhaustion, he said.

Antique diner rolls into Pawtucket

PAWTUCKET - Christy N. Skodras, 64 of Pawtucket died Wednesday at Kent Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born in Pawtucket he was the son of the late Nicholas Skodras.
Christy graduated from West High School and then attended East Coast Aero Tech in Massachusetts. He worked at General Dynamics where he also obtained his MBA.
He is survived by his mother, Eviginia Skodras; a sister, Catherine Bio; four children, Michael, Robert, Matthew and Melissa Skodras; a niece, Alexandria Bio and a nephew, Philip Bio.

Tony had worked at Ciba-Geigy Corp, of Cranston for 25 years before retiring in 1986. He was a WWII Army Veteran.
Tony enjoyed Golfing, loved the Red Sox and was a baseball card collector for many years.

(Johnston) Charron-Parkinson and her husband, Robin Parkinson of Hudson, FL and the late Richard A. Charron, and the biological son of Charles V. Martel, Sr. of Pawtucket. He resided in Rhode Island until moving to Oregon in 2005. Sean was an electrical engineer and served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1981 until 1989.

Hearing set on proposed zoning changes

PAWTUCKET — Changes to the city's zoning ordinances that are designed to make the downtown more business-friendly—including one that removes parking requirements-- have been proposed by the Planning Department.
A public hearing on the proposed amendments will be held by the City Council on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. at Pawtucket City Hall. The City Council could give first passage to the changes that night, and a second vote will be required for adoption.

Ruling may put crimp in pension plan

PROVIDENCE — State employees and schoolteachers “possess implied unilateral contract rights” to their pension benefits, a Superior Court judge ruled Tuesday, keeping alive a lawsuit challenging previous changes made in state pension laws and further complicating ongoing efforts to make more changes that General Treasurer Gina Raimondo says are necessary to avert a fiscal calamity.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pawtucket.
She is survived by her three children, Patricia Riley of El Paso, Texas, Robert W. Castle of Pawtucket and Diane Richardson of Bancroft, Idaho; ten grandchildren; and eighteen great grandchildren.

Mrs. DeLauder was a Assistant Special Education Teacher, for the Fallon School of Pawtucket for 20 years, retiring in 1990.
