Paula A. Picard, R.N.

JOHNSTON- Paula A. (Todd) Picard, R.N., 53, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 31, 2012. She was the loving wife of Gary D. Picard for 33 years.
Born in Pawtucket, she was a daughter of William L. and the late Gloria J. (Smith) Todd and the beloved step-daughter of Cheryl Todd.
Paula was Director of Nursing at New England Sinai Hospital, Stoughton, MA. She enjoyed bowling and traveling, and especially going on cruises.

Many concerns, few bright spots in Kids Count

PAWTUCKET — According to the latest data from the Rhode Island KIDS COUNT Factbook, there are many reasons for concern over Pawtucket children and their future well being. Yet, there are also a few bright spots on the horizon to offset mostly grim statistics.

PROVIDENCE — Gov. Lincoln Chafee declared Monday that “this is a new day at EDC,” because the RI Economic Development Corp. will start being more cautious about the way it doles out taxpayers’ money.
“We’ve been scorched; we’ve been burned, as it stands now,” Chafee acknowledged. “Rhode Islanders should know I am conservative by nature with every dollar and I always have been, as a mayor, as a (U.S.) senator, as a governor. There is going to be a full analysis before any investment is made.”

CUMBERLAND — As a sophomore, Cumberland High senior Kara Gorman blew out a shoulder throwing the javelin, but attempted to make a comeback her junior outdoor track and field season.
“It was a ‘no-go,’” she explained. “Way too painful.”
This past fall, a few members of the girls’ lacrosse squad begged her to sign up for their program, as they desperately needed a goalie, and she finally acquiesced.

PAWTUCKET — No. 2 and No. 3 seeds don’t usually battle each other until the semifinals of a winners’ bracket, not in the opening round of a losers’ bracket, but that’s where Tolman and North Smithfield were contesting each other on Monday afternoon.
And not only did both teams head into Slater Park looking to erase the sting of 1-0 defeats from the previous afternoon, but they had to combat the misty weather and temperatures in the low 50s thoughout this part of the state.

CENTRAL FALLS- Jose DaGraca, "Djidjinho" 79, passed June 2nd at home. He was the husband of the late Maria (Moniz) DaGraca.
Born in Brava, Cape Verde, he was a son of the late Manuel Goncalves and Carlotina DaGraca.
Djidjinho had been employed by American Insulated Wire for over 30 years.

ATTLEBORO- James "Jimmy" R. Walsh, 48, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 2, 2012.
Born in Warwick, he was a son of Lois E. (Tallman) Walsh of South Attleboro and the late Thomas E. Walsh.
James worked as a household furniture mover for the Sterling Moving Co. for over 20 years.
He was a devoted son and brother, caring for his mother and sister over the last seven years. Jimmy was a car enthusiast and he also enjoyed fishing, holding yard sales and following wrestling.

PAWTUCKET- Roseanna (Lambert) Messier-Bechard passed peacefully with her loving family by her side on June 2nd. She was the wife of the late Omer Messier and Hubert Bechard.
She recently celebrated her 98th birthday while receiving exceptional care at the Pawtucket Skilled Nursing.
Born in North Providence, a daughter of the late Leon and Agnes (Chartier) Lambert.
Roseanna had worked many years at the State of RI Medical Center before retiring.

PAWTUCKET- Janice R. Pace, 80, of Pawtucket died Thursday, May 31, 2012.
Mrs. Pace was born in Fall river MA, the daughter of the late Everett E. and Marion E. (Hall) Brown. She was a dietary Technician at the Memorial Hospital in Pawtucket for many years.
Mrs. Pace is survived by her son William J. Pace and her granddaughter Kierstyn Pace of Norton MA.

PAWTUCKET- Anna Belle Lapalme, 85 of Pawtucket, passed away Saturday, June 2, 2012. She was the wife of the late Roland "Red" Lapalme.
Born in Cumberland, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Margaret (Norris) McGreaves.
She is survived by a daughter, Sally Zona, and her son-in-law, John Zona, who she considered her own son. She was the sister of the late Sally Prete.

MARLBOROUGH- Sr. Jeannette Joinville, a Sister of St. Anne, known in religion as Sister Marie Eveline of Jesus, died at the age of 98 at Marie Esther Health Center in this city on June 3, 2012. She was in the 77th year of the religious life.
She was the daughter of the late Theodore and Evelina (Lefebvre) Joinville of Central Falls, RI. She completed both her elementary and high school education at Notre Dame School in Central Falls and continued her studies at Anna Maria College, Paxton.

CUMBERLAND- Felisbela (Duarte) Bernardo "VOVO", 96, of Old Mendon Road, and previously Geldard Street, passed away Sunday in the Holiday Retirement Center, Lincoln. She was the wife of the late Francisco Bernardo.
Born in Aores, Celorico da Beira, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Antonio and Maria Adelaide (Martins) Duarte. She moved to this country in 1931 settling in Cumberland.

Vazquez, Crawley track down state championships

PROVIDENCE — Central Falls High senior Steve Vazquez and Cumberland junior Trevor Crawley maintained vastly different outlooks about reigning in their respective individual events at Sunday's Rhode Island Interscholastic Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Vazquez had just captured the high jump crown with a leap of 6 feet, eight inches at Brown Stadium, yet he sat virtually alone on a steel bench, shedding tears, just yards away from the bar that failed him.

PAWTUCKET — Woonsocket High’s answer to grace under fire was one cool customer on Sunday afternoon.
With her team locked in a scoreless duel against Tolman High, senior Kelsey Boucher changed the playoff fate of two teams with one mighty poke. Her solo home run in the sixth inning – one that hit the top of the fence at Slater Park’s Al Bailey Field before bouncing over – proved to be the deciding factor in the seventh-seeded Villa Novans’ 1-0 upset victory against the Tigers, the No. 2 in the Division II double-elimination tournament.

Mount seniors reach summit

WOONSOCKET — A runner turning onto Mount St. Charles Avenue encounters a hill that only gets steeper, more challenging the farther the runner travels up it. It is only when the runner crests the top near Mount St. Charles Academy that the reward, a wide-ranging view of the land around the school, can be claimed.
A similar challenge faced the 196 members of the Class of 2012 graduating from Mount on Sunday when they began their studies at the private high school operated by the Brothers of the Sacred Heart.

McJennett replaces Flanders as C.F. receiver

CENTRAL FALLS – Saying it heralds a “new period in Central Falls’ recovery,” Gov. Lincoln Chafee has appointed John F. McJennett III, as the city’s new receiver, replacing the controversial Robert Flanders.
McJennett is the former executive director of DEPCO (Rhode Island Depositors Economic Protection Corporation), the state’s response to the credit union crisis.
