PAWTUCKET – Joseph Sekator is a coach’s dream, an early Christmas present for the Coventry High basketball program.
CUMBERLAND — Junior tri-captain Kayleigh Canavan expected to swim rather well in Cumberland High’s Division I season opener against Smithfield on Tuesday afternoon, but what she accomplished, frankly, threw her for a loop.
Canavan not only manufactured two of her best times ever while capturing the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke, but she also mustered a superb 50 breaststroke leg in the 200 medley relay to pace her Clippers to an easier-than-expected 55-38 triumph over the Sentinels at the Aquatic Center.
NORTH SMITHFIELD — After playing horribly at the tail end of the initial half and the first part of the second, Lincoln High manufactured an 19-3 flurry over the final 7:29 to edge North Smithfield, 49-45, in a R.I. Injury Fund opener on Monday night.
Thanks to senior tri-captain Devon Deragon’s pretty fast-break lay-in at that juncture of the game, the Northmen seemed destined to reign with a 42-30 cushion. But the Lions took advantage of several miscues by the hosts to move to 1-0.
PAWTUCKET – It is not yet mid-December and high school basketball coaches have hardly begun to shuffle the deck in search of winning hands.
“We’re looking for players,” St. Raphael Academy coach Tom Sorrentine said after finding at least one during Friday night’s 57-48 victory over Shea at Alumni Hall in an Injury Fund contest that doesn’t count in the standings.
Sophomore Peter Wilson came off the bench to lead the Saints with 21 points. Wilson is one of four players Sorrentine is rotating at the point guard position.
PAWTUCKET – Providence Country Day will get the chance to officially defend its Lynch Tournament crown after racing past Central Falls, 78-47, Thursday night. Former St. Raphael star Alex Holloway had an effective 14 points while junior Joe McNamara led all scorers with 17 points on three 3-pointers.
David DePina paced Central Falls with 10 points.
PCD will take on Woonsocket in what figures to be an entertaining championship game on Saturday night. C.F. will face St. Raphael in the consolation contest.
PROVIDENCE — For the second straight season the University of Rhode Island men’s basketball team’s senior class will graduate without knowing what it feels like to beat archrival Providence College.
Dallas (9-4) 41
Chicago (5-8) 28
Dallas used the 3rd quarter to put this game out of reach. After a tightly contested first half the score was 14-7 in Dallas’ favor. Dallas was able to use an early second half turnover to score a 24 yard touchdown pass from Tony Romo to Cole Beasley. They used great field position to tack on 2 more touchdowns before the end of the 3rd quarter to make the score 35-7. Chicago made the game somewhat close thanks to a 21 point fourth quarter of their own, but it was too little, too late.
Pittsburgh (8-5) 42
Cincinnati (8-4-1) 21
CRANSTON – Buoyed by a three-touchdown day from halfback Andrew Howard and a shutout second-half by their defense, Moses Brown prevailed against Shea High, 28-14 in Sunday's Division II Super Bowl.
PAWTUCKET – It’s been a whirlwind, wildly exciting four days for St. Raphael Academy student-athlete Alfred Dorbor.
PAWTUCKET – This past September, the Houston Astros found themselves scrambling to find a new home for their Triple-A franchise.
When the Boston Red Sox signed free agent shortstop Hanley Ramirez and then implied in various forums that the career-long infielder would likely be taking over left field duties, it revealed something about the team’s philosophy on flycatchers – that outfielders are made and not born.
CUMBERLAND – The game had been over for nearly 15 minutes, maybe a bit longer, but the Cumberland High gridders remained on the Tucker Field turf posing for pictures for any amateur photographer who asked.
Some danced around with teammates, others issued hugs to parents while a few gathered around the one holding the annual Thanksgiving Day trophy to study the history behind it.
LINCOLN – The final game for Ferguson Field’s grass surface proved to be an entertaining affair.
A one-yard run by Central Falls quarterback Malik Velazquez provided the deciding points in the Warriors’ come-from-behind 28-21 triumph against Thanksgiving rival Lincoln Friday night. C.F. now leads the holiday series, 3-2.
PAWTUCKET – In an anti-climactic conclusion to a season of great expectations, St. Raphael Academy blanked Super Bowl-bound Moses Brown 34-0 on Friday morning at Pariseau Field.
PAWTUCKET – Shea High and Tolman played a Thanksgiving football game for the ages on Friday evening at Max Read Field.
In a game that meant nothing but pride for both sides, Tolman jumped out to a 19-0 lead in the first quarter and led 33-21 at halftime before the Raiders rallied in the second half to take home a scintillating 49-40 victory over their crosstown rivals.
PAWTUCKET – It could be the end of an era for one of the local sports scene’s most beloved franchises, although nothing is official yet.
PAWTUCKET – The sight of a quarterback taking a knee comes at the end of the game when the outcome is no longer in doubt – in football parlance it’s commonly referred to as the genuflect offense.
When Tolman High was dealt a one-year playoff ban by the Interscholastic League Principals’ Committee on Athletics for a brief on-field skirmish in 2013, the 2014 team could have easily found itself taking a season-long kneel down.
