PawSox newcomer Marrero to remain at SS ... for now

July 2, 2014

PAWTUCKET – Deven Marrero attended Arizona State, the same Pac-12 school that also produced Dustin Pedroia. Both players lined up at shortstop for the Sun Devils prior to getting drafted by the Boston Red Sox.

Threat of tropical storm not going to put a damper on Arnold Mills Road Race

July 2, 2014

CUMBERLAND – For those harriers who make the running of the annual Arnold Mills Four-Mile Road Race part of their Fourth of July morning, Race Director Tom Kenwood has a simple message.

In response to the concern over the ever-growing list of reports in reference to Tropical Storm Arthur and the potential it has to wreck havoc on the celebrations that are on the docket for Friday, Kenwood says that until otherwise, its still business as usual as far as the 46th running of Arnold Mills is concerned.

Cumberland wins fifth straight Major Division District IV Softball title

July 2, 2014

CUMBERLAND – Gloucester/Burrillville All-Stars manager Dave Peloquin admitted after his club had suffered a disgruntling 17-2 loss in a R.I. Little League District IV Major Division (11-12) Tournament round-robin finale on Monday night that he had a surprise in store for Cumberland I.

In the winner-take-all championship final, he would pitch Rebecca Arndt, a tall, strong hurler with an innate ability for baffling hitters – not to mention strikeouts.

The date: March 26, 2006.

Cumberland blasts Glocester/Burrillville; same two teams to meet for District IV softball title

June 30, 2014

BURRILLVILLE — Cumberland I head coach Steve D’Abrosca had hoped for a premier collective performance from his crew on Monday evening, but wasn’t quite sure if he’d get it.

His troops did, and didn’t, surprise him.

Righthander Abbie Vallely turned in a magical performance in the circle, yielding just three hits and a trio of walks while whiffing 10, and his offense produced four doubles as Cumberland I coasted to a 15-2 triumph over Glocester/Burrillville in a R.I. District IV Major Division (11-12) Tournament round-robin finale at Hauser Field.

PawSox' Brentz staying positive after hamstring strain

June 30, 2014

PAWTUCKET – For Bryce Brentz, slow and steady must prevail in his quest to shake free of the persistent hamstring issue that has his season on pause.

“The progress has been good and we’re ahead of schedule right now, but we don’t want to have any more setbacks,” said the PawSox outfielder when reached Monday in Fort Myers, Fla.

Presently, his days are filled with restoring strength to the right hamstring strain that has kept him out of the lineup since May 15.

Mookie, we hardly knew you: Betts' stay with PawSox was short, sweet

June 28, 2014

PAWTUCKET – Mookie Betts made his Pawtucket Red Sox debut on June 3. Barely three weeks later, the highly-coveted prospect saw the Red Sox call an end to his Triple-A apprenticeship and throw another log into the “Mookie Mania” fire pit.

Will Torres' arrival with PawSox reduce Betts' time in CF?

June 26, 2014

PAWTUCKET — Even though several potential suitors were knocking on his door, Andres Torres was not going to sign with a major-league club until he felt fine physically.
“I wasn’t ready because I had the surgery (to repair a strained left Achilles’ tendon). It takes time. I just took my time and made sure that I was good to go,” said Torres on Thursday, his first day with the Pawtucket Red Sox. “I [heard] from a few teams, but I was just waiting for the right moment. Once I feel good, I just signed with Boston.”

Cecchini's grand slam powers PawSox past Norfolk

June 26, 2014

PAWTUCKET – If you weren’t settled into your seat at McCoy Stadium until the second inning Thursday night, you missed a lot.
A five-run first inning highlighted by Garin Cecchini’s grand slam propelled Pawtucket to a 7-3 victory over Norfolk before 5,297. Cecchini turned on a 2-1 offering from Jason Gurka and deposited it into the right-field bullpen for his third home run of the season.
The homer enabled Cecchini to take over the club lead in RBI with 30. The previous leader was Bryce Brentz with 28. Brentz hasn’t appeared in a game for the PawSox since May 15.

PawSox' Ranaudo fine after taking hard shot off left leg

June 25, 2014

PAWTUCKET – Do not confuse the red welt on Anthony Ranaudo’s left thigh as a badge of honor. It stung, but not to the point that the Pawtucket Red Sox right-hander could not go back out for the sixth inning Tuesday night.

Holt's durability isn't lost on PawSox

June 25, 2014

PAWTUCKET — There have been three editions to Paul Dickson’s handy and comprehensive “The Dickson Baseball Dictionary,” though no revised version has graced bookstore shelves in the past five years.
If and when Dickson gets around to updating the game’s vernacular – 952 pages of words and phrases suggests that the author has covered all the bases (no pun intended) – he should make it a point to insert the full name of the Red Sox’ current version of a Swiss Army knife: Brock Holt.

Van Pelt, Stricker repeat as CVS Caremark Charity Classic champions

June 24, 2014

BARRINGTON — If PGA stalwarts Steve Stricker and Bo Van Pelt had their way, they'd return to the CVS Caremark Charity Classic every summer.
The only problem? Given the duo's remarkable success at Rhode Island Country Club over the past two years, tournament co-hosts and local favorites Brad Faxon and Billy Andrade joked about their possible return after a wildly-entertaining finish early Tuesday afternoon.
When asked if there was anything he would change about the event, Faxon grinned, “I wouldn't invite Stricker back. He's too good.”

Even with newfound attention, PawSox's Betts remains as cool as ever

June 24, 2014

PAWTUCKET — It wasn’t Mookie Betts’ intention to create a firestorm. Thanks to his strong play since joining the PawSox three weeks ago coupled with Red Sox manager John Farrell’s impromptu “I know Mookie Betts is swinging the bat well” remark last weekend, the 21-year-old wunderkind is being seen in a different light.

In response to the attention that goes with the territory of being the flavor of the moment, Betts sought out Kevin Boles. The last thing Betts wanted to do was to make the life of the PawSox manager even more chaotic.

Victorino hopes to play nine innings with PawSox before heading back to Boston

June 24, 2014

PAWTUCKET — In the world of target dates and timetables, Shane Victorino’s bid to rejoin the Red Sox during the team’s current West Coast sojourn came up well short.
With Wednesday marking the final game of a three-game set in Seattle, the best that Victorino can hope for is a return this weekend in New York. In order reach the point where the Red Sox feel comfortable enough to activate him, it’s safe to say that the outfielder will have to withstand the challenge of playing nine innings.

Crowded leaderboard atop CVS Caremark Charity Classic

June 23, 2014

BARRINGTON – Peter Jacobsen found himself in an unusual position when the first round of the 16th annual CVS Caremark Charity Classic ended Monday afternoon.

The former PGA star and playing partner Jimmy Walker manufactured a nine-under 62 at Rhode Island Country Club, and he admitted being tied for the lead – with the defending champion tandem of Steve Stricker and Bo Van Pelt – was a spot he didn't anticipate.

“What was our secret? I don't know, except maybe my youngest daughter (Kristen Sahler) is in the hospital (in Greenwich, Conn.); she's in labor, so maybe that's it,” he smiled.

LSU's Jolly completes wire-to-wire showing at Northeast Amateur

June 21, 2014

EAST PROVIDENCE – Stewart Jolly admitted he had a tremendously difficult decision to make earlier this spring.

Do I travel with my teammates to the prestigious Palmer Cup, or do I keep my word and compete in the Northeast Amateur Invitational?

He struggled with which way to go for days, England or southeastern New England, he said, but the 21-year-old senior-to-be at Louisiana State University couldn't have been happier with the choice at about 3:20 p.m., Saturday.

A jolly good time: LSU product still in command at Northeast Amateur

June 19, 2014

Sports editor emeritus

EAST PROVIDENCE – Someone turned the wind machine down to low and Mother Nature dropped a bit of rain on Wannamoisett Country Club’s dry greens and all of a sudden the best players in this year’s Northeast Amateur field began to make some birdies.

Not a whole lot, mind you. LSU’s Stewart Jolly made four birdies en route to his second straight round of 67 on Thursday, giving him a three-shot lead at the halfway point over Mercer University grad Hans Reimers, who shot par 69 in the second round.
