Total Devotion: Tom Kenwood celebrates 40 years at helm of Clippers' track & field program

November 20, 2013

CUMBERLAND – You knew long before the question was posed how uncomfortable Tom Kenwood was.

Now in his 40th year as the Cumberland High boys’ indoor and outdoor track & field mentor, the soft-spoken Kenwood always has dodged – still does – any queries about his impact on the consistent successes of his teams; he’ll talk about his athletes’ intense work ethic and drive, competitive nature, etc., as the reason.

In fact, during this particular “sit down” with Kenwood in the Wellness Center’s Room 103, surrounded by free weights, Kenwood seemed a bit fidgety.

Manfredo Jr., Gingras await Friday night's main event of CES's 'Pride and Power' boxing show at Twin River

November 19, 2013

LINCOLN — Two years ago, a main event between Peter Manfredo Jr. and Rich Gingras would have been very unlikely and one of the last pairings any matchmaker could have imagined.
Two years ago, Manfredo was one of the top middleweight fighters in the world, battling Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. for the WBC championship, while Gingras, who fought as a cruiserweight and light heavyweight from 2006-2009, was 26 months removed from his last fight, electing to devote the bulk of his time getting his new gym, Fight 2 Fitness in Pawtucket, off the ground and running smoothly.

SRA looks back on win, looks ahead to Cumberland

November 17, 2013

PAWTUCKET — Moments after St. Raphael Academy had claimed a controversial, down-to-the-wire, stunning 15-14 triumph over Woonsocket High on Saturday afternoon, head coach Mike Sassi stood at Barry Field with his youngest daughter in his arms speaking with media types.

WOONSOCKET — A single image defined Woonsocket High’s incredulously disappointing 15-14 loss to St. Raphael Academy on Saturday afternoon.
Perhaps 15 minutes after the R.I. Division II quarterfinal defeat, junior running back/linebacker Jaston Robinson exited the Barry Field clubhouse doors and – after being approached by a WHS parent – fell into his arms and sobbed.

What can the past tell us about organization's search for next possible PawSox manager?

November 17, 2013

PAWTUCKET — If the past is any sort of indicator, the Red Sox can go in one of a number of directions in shopping for a new PawSox manager.

Pawtucket has seen four skippers come and go dating back to Buddy Bailey’s dismissal in 2004. In Ron Johnson and Arnie Beyeler, the Red Sox elected to go the internal route – both received promotions from their managerial posts in Double-A Portland. With Torey Lovullo and most recently Gary DiSarcina, the organization chose to cast a net outside the farm system and bring in someone with already set-in-stone connections.

Tigers maul undermanned Blue Wave for season’s first win

November 16, 2013

PAWTUCKET – After struggling through eight Division I losses, Tolman High deserved a break. And the Tigers got one on Friday night when Division IV pretender Hope High came to Pariseau Field with just 21 players in uniform.

November 16, 2013

PAWTUCKET -- Shea High exploded for 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to claim a thrilling, come-from-behind 28-18 non-league triumph over Westerly at Max Read Field on Friday night.

Yanique Duarte completed a 67-yard touchdown catch-and-run in the final stanza, good for his third score of the contest, before Andy Darius iced it with a 30-yard interception return for the paydirt. Signal caller Ty’shon Ashe added the two-point conversion as the Raiders earned not just the 10-point win, but also improved to 5-5 overall.

Familiar playoff foes SRA, Woonsocket to meet in Division II football quarterfinals

November 14, 2013

If last November’s riveting playoff result is any indication, the “rematch” between St. Raphael and Woonsocket in a R.I. Division II quarterfinal at Barry Field on Saturday should be a wild one.

The Villa Novans had trailed the Saints, 13-0, at the break, but rallied for 21 points in the second half, including 14 in the final quarter, to knot it at 21-21 at Pariseau Field.

In the end, SRA veteran mentor Mike Sassi’s crew took a 28-21 advantage in overtime, though Woonsocket later notched a TD to pull to within one.

McGair: Local standouts deliver on RIC men's soccer team

November 13, 2013

A little of this, a little of that …

You could say there was a heavy presence of local talent on this fall’s men’s soccer program at Rhode Island College.

The roster featured three players from Pawtucket – Camilo Estrada, Anderson Monteiro and Chuck Oddih – and two from Lincoln – Emmanuel Asiedu and Alexander LaBreche. Estrada and Asiedu learned earlier this week that their efforts and contributions did not go unnoticed by their contemporaries. Both were named to the Second Team All-Little East Conference.

Once again, SRA and Woonsocket to meet in Division II football quarterfinals

November 11, 2013

Last year, Woonsocket and St. Raphael staged a thrilling Division II quarterfinal-round playoff contest. A touchdown produced in the waning seconds of regulation enabled the Saints to force overtime, this after the Novans held a 21-13 advantage with just 90 seconds remaining.

Lincoln falls in Division II boys' soccer title match

November 9, 2013

PROVIDENCE – After exactly 100 minutes of regulation and overtime play, Lincoln High found itself in an eerily similar position in the R.I. Division II championship game against Toll Gate late Saturday afternoon.

Back on Nov. 2, the Lions played ninth-seeded East Greenwich to a 1-1 quarterfinal stalemate before eventually claiming a 2-1 shootout victory; that came via a 4-3 penalty-kick count.

Against third-ranked Toll Gate, Lincoln seemed to have some confidence built in following that previous third OT triumph, but one swing of the leg turned the tide.

West Warwick earns top seed in Div. II playoffs with 14-0 win over Cumberland; Clippers cop No. 2 berth

November 9, 2013

CUMBERLAND -- Cumberland needed to bring out its best football against a formidable opponent on Friday night if it wanted to repeat as Division II-B champions and earn the league’s top seed in the upcoming playoffs.
But instead of bringing out their best, the Clippers did the complete opposite against West Warwick and paid the price.

Friars outlast Eagles in OT, 82-78

November 9, 2013

PROVIDENCE – As he watched one Providence player after another foul out, Ed Cooley took a hard and long look at the available options on the bench.

What the head coach saw was his sophomore point guard in a finely tailored suit sitting alongside a collection of reserves that suddenly found themselves in the eye of the storm. With his options at a premium, Cooley motioned in the direction of Lee Goldsbrough and Ted Bancroft, hoping beyond belief that somehow, PC could survive this overtime session against Boston College.

Much riding on Cumberland-West Warwick football clash

November 7, 2013

CUMBERLAND – Before looking ahead to what could result in an unusual five-way tie for first place in the Division II-B ranks once the regular season ends this weekend, it’s time to take a history lesson and look back to the last (and only other) time this happened in the state.

In 2008, Tolman, Woonsocket, West Warwick, Warwick Vets, and Westerly found themselves tied for first place in the Division II-A standings with 5-2 records and scratching their heads over which were going to be the four that would play in the following weekend’s opening round of the playoffs.

PC Friars plan to make do in season opener against Boston College

PROVIDENCE – In his wildest dreams, Ed Cooley could probably not have imagined that he would have to deal with several criseis regarding player personnel on the eve of a new season for the Providence College Friars.

CRANSTON — After a scoreless initial half, Lincoln High head coach John D'Aloisio assembled his troops in front of a cage at Cranston Stadium on Wednesday night and informed them he wanted to employ a simplistic switch.
Because Providence Country Day's defense would sag around the net whenever the Lions possessed the ball – that in an effort to squelch any up-close attempts at Knights' sophomore keeper Justin LaRose, he wanted one of his forwards to hold back.

New Angels coach DiSarcina made quite the impact in one year as PawSox manager

November 6, 2013

PAWTUCKET — In the eyes of Gary DiSarcina’s now-former baseball employer, there’s no question that his deft and guiding hand that was omnipresent during his first and what turned out his only season managing the Pawtucket Red Sox played a crucial role in the parent club’s march to a World Series championship.

WEST GREENWICH — A little bit more of this, a little bit less of that, and the situation could've been vastly different inside the Exeter/West Greenwich High gymnasium on Tuesday night.
So said Cumberland High head coach Ruth Plante after she watched the Scarlet Knights capture a not-as-easy-as-it-seemed 3-0 triumph over her Clippers in a R.I. Division II Tournament quarterfinal.

East Greenwich makes quick work of Tolman in Division II volleyball quarterfinals

November 6, 2013

PAWTUCKET — Tolman High coach Roger Tow didn’t want to hear about how poorly his team played Tuesday night during a 3-0 loss to East Greenwich in the Division II quarterfinals.
“East Greenwich made us play poorly,” he told his athletic director, John Scanlan, following the 69-minute contest. “They had a good game plan coming in and they executed it. Our offense was missing. I think our team lost some confidence, too, as the match went along.”
