Cumberland American captures District IV Major Division title in thrilling fashion

BURRILLVILLE — If you have a penchant for the dramatic, and you attended the Cumberland American-Lincoln All-Star Game on Monday night, your appetite was whetted.

In the end, Jayden Struble walloped a three-run home run to left field with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to deliver to CALL a 9-6 walk-off victory over Lincoln at Sherman Park. With the triumph, Cumberland American not only captured the Rhode Island District IV Major Division crown, but also sealed a berth in next weekend’s state tournament in Bristol.

Surely such a development would have brought a smile to Epstein’s face if he were still running the day-to-day baseball operations on Yawkey Way.

WESTERLY – Losing the pregame coin toss was the only thing that didn’t go well for the Cumberland I Major Division Softball All-Stars on this night.
 
They pounded out 15 hits to post a convincing 11-6 victory over Warwick West Side Tuesday night in a Rhode Island State Tournament losers’ bracket final. Cumberland will return to the Paul E. Trombino Memorial Complex on Wednesday (5:30 p.m. first pitch) to face Cranston National.

PAWTUCKET – There was a time when the slightest mention of Anthony Ranaudo’s injury-marred 2012 campaign would prompt the same kind of reaction Brad Pitt had in the film “Fight Club.”

Paraphrasing the 1999 move – “We don’t talk about it.”

“Looking back it kind of stinks thinking that I lost a full year of development, but I’ve put it behind me,” said Raunado about his aforementioned trying season while sitting in the PawSox dugout recently.

Tierney takes star-spangled Arnold Mills

Two years ago, Colin Tierney came in third place at the Arnold Mills Four-Mile Road Race. Last year, the recent Bishop Hendricken graduate and freshman-to-be at Columbia University crossed the finish line right behind the event’s winner, Brian Doyle, the son of former Ocean State marathon great Bobby Doyle.

Threat of tropical storm not going to put a damper on Arnold Mills Road Race

CUMBERLAND – For those harriers who make the running of the annual Arnold Mills Four-Mile Road Race part of their Fourth of July morning, Race Director Tom Kenwood has a simple message.

In response to the concern over the ever-growing list of reports in reference to Tropical Storm Arthur and the potential it has to wreck havoc on the celebrations that are on the docket for Friday, Kenwood says that until otherwise, its still business as usual as far as the 46th running of Arnold Mills is concerned.

Cumberland wins fifth straight Major Division District IV Softball title

CUMBERLAND – Gloucester/Burrillville All-Stars manager Dave Peloquin admitted after his club had suffered a disgruntling 17-2 loss in a R.I. Little League District IV Major Division (11-12) Tournament round-robin finale on Monday night that he had a surprise in store for Cumberland I.

In the winner-take-all championship final, he would pitch Rebecca Arndt, a tall, strong hurler with an innate ability for baffling hitters – not to mention strikeouts.

Ranaudo, Vazquez to represent PawSox at Triple-A All-Star Game

CRANSTON – Hanging from the kitchen wall in Dick and Rollie Ernst's cozy Philmont Avenue abode is a laurel he received after his North Smithfield High School icemen captured the R.I. Division III Boys' Hockey Tournament crown with a 6-4 triumph over East Providence at Schneider Arena.

BURRILLVILLE — Cumberland I head coach Steve D’Abrosca had hoped for a premier collective performance from his crew on Monday evening, but wasn’t quite sure if he’d get it.

His troops did, and didn’t, surprise him.

Righthander Abbie Vallely turned in a magical performance in the circle, yielding just three hits and a trio of walks while whiffing 10, and his offense produced four doubles as Cumberland I coasted to a 15-2 triumph over Glocester/Burrillville in a R.I. District IV Major Division (11-12) Tournament round-robin finale at Hauser Field.

PawSox' Brentz staying positive after hamstring strain

PAWTUCKET – For Bryce Brentz, slow and steady must prevail in his quest to shake free of the persistent hamstring issue that has his season on pause.

“The progress has been good and we’re ahead of schedule right now, but we don’t want to have any more setbacks,” said the PawSox outfielder when reached Monday in Fort Myers, Fla.

Presently, his days are filled with restoring strength to the right hamstring strain that has kept him out of the lineup since May 15.
