PAWTUCKET  –  Whatever good will had been displayed over the previous two-plus hours quickly evaporated at the end of the R.I. Division II Tournament quarterfinal clash between Shea-Mount Pleasant on Friday night.

St. Raphael Academy Football | STUNNED – Saints knocked out by Johnston, 33-31

PAWTUCKET – Johnston High pulled off the upset of the year on Friday night, knocking unbeaten St. Raphael Academy out of the Division II playoffs with a stunning 33-31 victory at Pariseau Field.

Johnston utilized the Wing-T offense formerly favored by the host Saints and tore holes in the SRA defense. Halfback Marc Conte ran for two touchdowns and scored another on a pick-six interception to spark the Panthers, who came into the game with a 3-4 league record. The Saints were 7-0.

Tolman senior Leiandra Wilson is all smiles as she gets ready to take part in a signing ceremony at the high school Wednesday afternoon. Wilson signed her letter of intent to attend Saint Anselm College in New Hampshire on a softball scholarship.

Another national letter-of-intent signing day is upon us and several Blackstone Valley high schools have student-athletes set to perform their best signatures. For this noteworthy group, everything at last becomes official after months, if not more than a year, of honoring their verbal commitment.

In a perfect world, Pawtucket would be the epicenter of interscholastic Division II football this week with Shea, Tolman and St. Raphael all gearing up for the postseason. Alas, the reality is that just two of the three schools are in the equation.

The Division II brackets were finalized and released Sunday with Shea and St. Raphael learning their respective quarterfinal-round opponents. High school football enthusiasts in the city have been presented with a conundrum as the Raiders and Saints each have home games Friday night at 7 p.m.

CUMBERLAND – It’s hard to believe Saturday night’s Division I playoff match between unbeaten Shea High and La Salle Academy was just a semifinal round contest. All of the trappings suggested this contest meant everything to all involved. The stands and running track at Tucker Field were filled with more than 300 rabid fans who gave off as much energy as the players and coaches roaming the ersatz turf.

FIVE GUY: Dorbor scores 5 TDs to lead Saints over Novans, 42-0

PAWTUCKET – The well-oiled football machine that is St. Raphael Academy finished off an unbeaten Division II-A schedule with a 42-0 victory over Woonsocket on Friday night at Pariseau Field.

Lincoln High scored all the points it would need on Friday night after Alex Leclerc hooked up with Jermain Perez on a 46-yard, first-quarter touchdown aerial.

LINCOLN -- The euphoria that surrounded Oseh Lie-Saine signing a National Letter of Intent with Boston College’s football program last February eventually gave way to the understanding that some unfinished business remained.

The former Lincoln High standout needed to bump up his SAT score in order to meet the necessary NCAA eligibility requirements to suit up for the Eagles. Though he proved unable to reach the desired test figure before the start of the 2014 college football season, Saine never gave up hope.

Class A

NORTH SCITUATE– Nichole Barger, Amy Laverty and Meaghan Scullin all finished in the top 20 overall to pace the Clippers to a third-place team finish at the R.I. Class A Championships.

Barger, a senior, came in ninth overall, running the 3.1-mile course in 19:43.50. Laverty and Scullin took 13th and 16th, with times of 19:58.67 and 20:04.06, respectively. Rounding out Cumberland’s top five were Julia Dempsey (22nd) and Colleen Enestvedt (27th).
