March 5, 2013

CUMBERLAND — During the early afternoon hours Sunday, approximately 16 hours after what was most certainly the most impactful and thrilling triumph in the two-year history of the Lincoln/Cumberland Co-op girls' hockey program, senior captain Jean Bray and her teammates congregated at freshman phenom Cassidy Simanski's home.
They did so for what Bray called a “Hair-Dyeing Party.

Lions vs. Clippers highlights semifinal slate in boys' hockey

March 5, 2013

Looking for a good semifinal-round series to follow this weekend?
It’s going to be awfully tough to pick just one.
Two series contain neighboring teams battling each other. Another features the region’s best parochial school team taking on the state’s top public school squad, and the fourth is a battle between two teams that saw two of their three regular-season games end in ties.
The best-of-three action begins on Friday, and the Division I series featuring Burrillville and Cranston West kicks off the schedule with an early 7 p.m. game at Levy Arena.

March 5, 2013

PROVIDENCE — As most people expected, No. 1 seeded Middletown and defending champion Juanita Sanchez won their Division III semifinal-round games on Monday night at Rhode Island College.
But they didn’t leave the Tripp Athletic Center without getting tough battles from Davies and North Smithfield, which despite coming up short in their respective bids to reach Sunday’s title game at URI’s Ryan Center, turned in admirable performances.

Second-year Lincoln/Cumberland co-op team advances to Div. II girls' championship series

March 3, 2013

PAWTUCKET — Once the final horn had sounded, Lincoln/Cumberland Co-op head coach Dick Ernst spoke to his enthused pride of Lions in its second-floor locker room above the Lynch Arena ice on Saturday night before he strolled into the nearby press box.
There, he took a seat in a cushy leather chair and grinned, “That was something. That was something! Did you see that passing? Unbelievable!”
Ernst had been referring to his squad's 5-1 beatdown of the Narragansett/North Kingstown/South Kingstown in the second game of this best-of-three R.I. Division II Tournament semifinal set.

Moses Brown ousts SRA girls in Div. II quarterfinals

March 3, 2013

PROVIDENCE — There were bodies scrambling around the hardwood and guttural signs of exhaust.
There was also a thrilling comeback bid by a St. Raphael outfit that trailed by a dozen points with just over five minutes remaining. Alas, the quest to overtake Moses Brown fell just short as the Saints’ season ended in a 44-40 loss to Moses Brown in Sunday’s R.I. Division II Tournament quarterfinal-round contest at Rhode Island College.

Lincoln, Tolman advance to hockey semifinals

March 3, 2013

WEST WARWICK -- Unlike the other three Division II quarterfinal-round series in the state, unbeaten Lincoln was able to sweep its best-of-three series with eighth-seeded East Greenwich on Saturday at the West Warwick Civic Center.
For the second straight night, the Lions skated to a 3-2 win over the Avengers, but unlike their victory in the series opener, Lincoln (19-0-1) needed to work overtime to put away its longtime foe.

Junior Jared Pedro, who had been nursing a dislocated shoulder, closed with a pair of goals, despite playing as a defenseman to keep the injury out of harm's way. Elder brother and senior tri-captain Ryan Pedro manufactured a goal and two assists.

Ex-PC Friars standout God Shammgod can relate to Ricky Ledo

March 1, 2013

PROVIDENCE — As if on cue, God Shammgod started talking about Ricky Ledo’s situation.
Mind you, there wasn’t a lead-in question posed to Shammgod with the intent of correlating his two-year playing stint at Providence College to the same temptations of leaving school prematurely that Ledo will deal with soon enough. Sitting in Alumni Hall’s cafeteria the other day, the conversation with the now 36-year-old Shammgod began with how much he’s enjoyed being back on PC’s campus as an undergrad student and a member of Ed Cooley’s basketball staff.

Shea's Coleman leaves no stone unturned in providing information

PAWTUCKET — You could say Henry Coleman goes above and beyond the call of duty. Then again, when you have a zest for leaving no stone unturned and the passion is vehemently apparent, it’s never perceived as work.

Cumberland football players key basketball team's success

February 27, 2013

CUMBERLAND — Basketball-wise, Tom Lazaras, Mitchell Baxter and Trent Vasey weren’t going to teach Ben Bradley, Dylan Boisclair, Rob Reedy and Greg Joubert anything new. Yet in order to reach the championship destination that Cumberland High’s basketball camp dropped anchor upon last weekend, the first group of Clipper triplets had to do some gardening.

Shea, Cumberland, North Smithfield all in same region for R.I. state hoops tourney

February 26, 2013

After the four, four-team regions that comprise the R.I. boys’ basketball open tournament were revealed, clever minds declared Region IV “The Blackstone Valley Invitational.”
The folks at The Prout School may feel slighted with such a bold declaration, but look at the rest of the region’s participants. Here you have two of the three division champions in Cumberland and North Smithfield along with Shea.
In other words, the moniker fits.

Cumberland defeats Shea for Div. II hoop crown

February 24, 2013

PROVIDENCE — Winning has become contagious for Cumberland High’s athletic department, spreading from one season to the next.
With the fall producing a Super Bowl champion along with the state’s top male cross-country runner (Trevor Crawley), the pressure fell squarely on the Clippers’ winter sports’ entries to keep the good times flowing. Crawley kept up his end of the bargain when the swift 12th grader captured the 3,000-meter run at the R.I. Indoor Track & Field Championships two weekends ago.

He then sprinted to the opposite side and leaped into head coach Mike Tuorto's arms; while hugging him and grinning at able assistant Anthony Turchetta, Zicuis threw his fist into the air, index finger pointing skyward.

Ponaganset skates past Tolman

February 22, 2013

BURRILLVILLE — With the Division III playoffs a weekend away and teams across the division trying to play their best hockey down the stretch, Tolman could ill afford to put forth the performance it did against Ponaganset on Thursday afternoon.
The Tigers struggled with penalties throughout the first period and took just 17 shots on the Chieftains en route to a 3-1 loss at Levy Arena that finalized the league’s postseason picture.

Lady Lions fight the good fight, but Panthers prevail

February 22, 2013

JOHNSTON — Its star player might have been lost to a head injury in the early stages of the game, but that didn’t prevent Lincoln from giving one of the Division II’s best teams a hard-fought battle to the end on Thursday night.
Host Johnston celebrated its Senior Night with a victory over the Lions in the Division II-North regular-season finale for both playoff teams, but the Lions turned in strong games defensively and on the glass and gave the Panthers a run for their money before winding up with a 36-34 loss.

PawSox name Jeff Levering new radio broadcaster

February 21, 2013

PAWTUCKET — Conducting a job interview via Skype didn’t impede Jeff Levering in the slightest.
Staring into a screen that contained the faces of Pawtucket Red Sox President Mike Tamburro, General Manager Lou Schwechheimer and Vice President of Public Relations Bill Wanless, Levering regaled the panel with tales of a teenage Dustin Pedroia. Picture two 16-year-olds playing on the same summertime baseball team and the lifelong memories that were forged.
