Upper Deck takes playoff battle with R&R Construction

July 31, 2013

WEST WARWICK — Upper Deck Post 86/14 was only looking for some insurance runs while holding a 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth inning on Wednesday night.
Yet when it was all said and done, one walk and one error by R&R Construction opened the floodgates for a big rally and a comfortable 9-3 win in the winner’s bracket semifinals of the American Legion “Final Eight” Tournament at McCarthy Field.
R&R ace pitcher Eddie Hole was working with authority through seven innings, allowing just two hits since the first inning. That was, until the eighth.

Middlebrooks is ejected in PawSox's loss to Tides

July 31, 2013

PAWTUCKET – It was apparent that Will Middlebrooks was not a happy camper.

On the same day that saw the Red Sox bring up Brock Holt to fill the infield void that was created in the wake of Jose Iglesias’ departure, Middlebrooks expressed his displeasure in a loud and boisterous way after striking out to end the third inning of Pawtucket’s 3-0 loss to Norfolk on matinee Wednesday at McCoy Stadium.

Left side of infield starts to come into focus for Red Sox

July 31, 2013

PAWTUCKET – In economic terms, the Red Sox were sitting on a surplus of shortstops and third basemen. As the Jake Peavy trade demonstrated, the organization was comfortable with putting that surplus to good use.

The parent club was not going to field a team that included Jose Iglesias, Xander Bogaerts, Will Middlebrooks and Garin Cecchini on the same roster at the same time. And as Iglesias is a free agent at the end of the season, the Red Sox were able to sidestep a potential off-season topic by trading away the one-time perceived starting shortstop of the future to Detroit.

DiSarcina, PawSox take trade rumors in stride

July 30, 2013

PAWTUCKET – It was akin to the calm before the storm Tuesday afternoon inside the PawSox clubhouse.
Some 24 hours before Wednesday’s 4 p.m. Eastern Time non-waiver trading deadline, Pawtucket took the field for batting practice. There was perfect attendance as Will Middlebrooks and Xander Bogaerts – two names that have swirled amidst the trade winds in recent days – joined the rest of their Triple-A teammates in heading back inside for a cool, air-conditioned sequester.

DiSarcina: Every player ‘should feel like they have an opportunity’ for a callup to Boston

July 29, 2013

PAWTUCKET — The conversation started out as a prime chance to look ahead for PawSox players Alex Hassan and Dan Butler. The pair is listed on Boston’s 40-man roster, meaning there’s a pretty good chance that each will make their big-league debuts when MLB rosters expand come September.
It wasn’t Gary DiSarcina’s intention to throw this reporter off the trail, but not soon after the two aforementioned names and the particular circumstances surrounding them were brought to his attention, the Pawtucket manager made a point that helped place everything in proper perspective.

Ten years later, Contreras, Lyon finally find themselves in same dugout with PawSox

July 29, 2013

PAWTUCKET — On the surface, it seems fitting that Jose Contreras and Brandon Lyon are locker room neighbors in the PawSox clubhouse.
One stall stands between the two veteran right-handed pitchers who by happenstance reported to the Triple-A ballclub on the same day (July 19). At this stage, Contreras, 41, and Lyon, 33, are intriguing due to the perception of bullpen depth that’s already in the fold – something the Red Sox at the moment seem to have in abundance considering Franklin Morales and Alex Wilson are in town this week for rehab assignments.

Elmwood Sports defeats Westerly in playoff opener

July 29, 2013

PAWTUCKET — It’s always nice to start the postseason slate with your top arm grabbing the ball for the first game.
That luxury becomes even better when your pitcher hurls a top-notch performance, as Elmwood Sports’ Bryan Quinlan exemplified in his squad’s 7-1 win over Westerly on Monday night in the opener of the best-of-three Connie Mack playoff series.

PawSox's Wright rules Lehigh Valley with four-hitter

July 28, 2013

PAWTUCKET — Prior to Sunday, the Pawtucket Red Sox had captured only two of 12 contests against North Division foe Lehigh Valley this season.
During that horrible slump, their hurlers had mustered a dismal ERA of 7.04, while their offense had contributed an equally horrendous collective batting average of .215.
In the third of this four-game set Sunday afternoon, Pawtucket would have its mettle tested for sure, as it would face talented Ethan Martin, who had been tied for second in International League wins with 11.

WEB ONLY: CALL's 10-11 team tops Johnston

July 27, 2013

BRISTOL – The unimaginable happened to Cumberland American’s best on Saturday morning.
In their opening tilt of the R.I. Little League Major Division (10-11) Tournament at King Philip’s Roger W. Pigeon Field, three of manager Dave Belisle’s hurlers – including usually-stellar Nick Croteau, Addison Kopack and Sean Meers – had serious problems finding the plate, and Johnston took complete advantage.
That trio surrendered six straight walks, in the process digging themselves a 5-0 hole after the top of the first frame.

Lincoln blasts off to Bristol with 13-2 win over Cranston West

July 26, 2013

CRANSTON – The Lincoln All-Stars didn't just dominate their games among Rhode Island's best, but turned all of them into cakewalks.

Their mastery of the bat was a major reason why.

Skipper Matt Netto's offensive-minded crew once again derailed Cranston Western, this time by a 13-2 count, to claim the R.I. Little League Major Division (11-12) Tournament title at CWLL's Michael P. Varrato Field home on Friday night.

Local boxers set to flock to Twin River this weekend

July 25, 2013

LINCOLN -- It will certainly be “Game On” for four fighters with local ties to the Blackstone Valley this weekend when Classic Entertainment & Sports, Inc. hosts an action-packed card at the Twin River Events Center.

Pawtucket middleweight Thomas Falowo will make his co-feature debut in an eight-round showdown, and Woonsocket super middleweight Joe Gardner will try to erase the sting of a close loss in May to Richard Gingras in a six-round battle.

Cumberland finishes New England pool play at 4-0, will face Maryland in Eastern Regional quarterfinals

July 24, 2013

BRISTOL, Conn. – The final game of pool play of the Little League Eastern Regionals may very well prove a harbinger of things to come.
Yes, the Cumberland Major Divisions All-Stars and the George J. Hummel Little League from Seymour, Conn. still have to get through its respective quarterfinal-round clashes before meeting with a spot in the regional championship hanging in the balance.
After the performance these same two teams staged Wednesday night at Breen Field on the Bart Giamatti Complex, it’s certainly within the realm of possibility that a rematch could be in the fold come Friday.

Cumberland American wins District IV 10-11 crown

July 24, 2013

CUMBERLAND — Perhaps the only thing Cumberland American's All-Stars didn't do as a team Wednesday night was hit for the cycle.
There were no triples, but it didn't really matter much.
Manager Dave Belisle's contingent amassed 15 hits, including four doubles and a dinger, and took advantage of eight errors as CALL posted an astonishingly-lopsided 22-5 “mercy-rule” victory over East Woonsocket's best in the R.I. Little League District IV Major Division (10-11) Tournament championship game at Garvin Field.

Pawtucket's Rainville enjoying life following pro baseball career

July 24, 2013

Jay Rainville decided, one day two years ago, to put his right arm to the test.

“I knew immediately that it wasn’t going to happen,” he remarked one recent Friday while standing by the home dugout at Chet Nichols Field.

It was the same right arm that in its heyday produced fastballs that lit up the radar gun and generated a resounding pop from the catcher’s mitt. It was the right arm that enabled this Pawtucket native and Bishop Hendricken alumnus to become a No. 1 draft choice of the Minnesota Twins and unlock the door to the exclusive world of professional baseball.

Cumberland continues to stay the course at Eastern Softball Regionals

July 23, 2013

BRISTOL, Conn. --- After watching his All-Star team nearly mercy-rule the Mount Abraham All-Stars of New Haven, Vt. in an easy victory on Sunday, Cumberland manager Chris Bodington knew that his girls had probably seen their last lopsided win of the Eastern Regional tournament.

On deck was a pool play contest against a team that took Cumberland extra innings a year ago in the tourney, two-time Maine state champ Scarborough, and the next game was against a tougher opponent, the George J. Hummel All-Stars of Seymour, Conn.

Pawtucket RBI club sets sights on Junior World Series

July 23, 2013

PAWTUCKET -- Almost simultaneously, co-managers Matt Bergeron and Luke McLaughlin leaned back in their office chairs rather amused when asked the question, “How the heck did you do it?!”

“We’re still trying to figure that out!” Bergeron exclaimed of the miraculous, comeback 13-12 victory recorded by the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket RBI Junior Division All-Stars over the Jersey City, N.J./Jackie Robinson Mets in Queens, N.Y. back on Saturday, July 13.

Upper Deck Post 86/14 sews up Northern Division title

July 22, 2013

WARWICK – Upper Deck Post 86/14 skipper Steve Reynolds Sr. admitted before his squad's final regular-season tilt against Senerchia Post 74 early Monday night that he'd be a bit shorthanded, as four or five of his players were home nursing minor injuries.
“It's a long season, and those things are going to happen,” he stated. “We're OK.”
The club was much better than that after recent Cumberland High grad and southpaw Dylan Boisclair scattered five hits and three walks while mowing down a half-dozen Senerchia batters in a satisfying 3-1 victory at Hendricken High's Ray Pepin Field.

WEB ONLY: Lincoln Little Leaguers rout Cranston Western in state tournament opener

July 20, 2013

CRANSTON — If the Lincoln All-Stars had any concerns during their R.I. Little League Major Division (11-12) Tournament opener on Saturday afternoon, they didn't relate to their collective performance but the weather conditions, which slowly deteriorated.
As the skies overhead grew dark and thunder resounding in the background, righty reliever Dave Bordieri put the finishing touches on Cranston Western, the crushed victim of relentless Lincoln's 13-0 “mercy rule” triumph at Michael P. Varrato Field.

Bodington, Cumberland bring heat in 11-1 victory over Charlton, Mass. in Eastern Regionals opener

July 19, 2013

BRISTOL, Conn. — Jocelyn Bodington delivered one of the finest outings of her young softball career, Alex Pina knocked in five runs to lead a potent attack at the plate, and the Cumberland All-Stars made their presence felt in a very big way on Friday afternoon in the Eastern Regional tournament.
The three-time Major Division state champions kicked off their New England pool play by parlaying Bodington’s dominant pitching and an 11-hit assault into an 11-1 win over Charlton, Mass. that went all six innings at Breen Field on the Bart Giamatti Complex.

Lincoln Little Leaguers awaits state tournament, contests Cranston Western in Saturday's opener

July 18, 2013

LINCOLN — On Tuesday afternoon, Lincoln All-Stars’ manager Matt Netto still didn’t know which opponent his team would face in the opening round of the upcoming state Little League Major Division (11-12) Tournament.
Because Cranston Western upset winners’ bracket titleist Johnston, 11-6, Monday night, those two District I representatives faced off in a winner-take-all championship game on Wednesday night at Cranston Western’s home site.
