Back to Bristol: Cumberland Major All-Stars eye return trip to Eastern Regional softball tournament

July 17, 2013

CUMBERLAND — When the Cumberland Major Division All-Stars arrive at the Bart Giamatti Complex in Bristol, Conn. sometime later this morning, they’re going to have the perfect guide to direct them around the facilities in Jocelyn Bodington.
That’s because the 12-year-old standout is the only member of last season’s ballclub – coaches included – that participated in the Eastern Regionals and was two victories away from capturing the regional championship and earning its way into the Little League World Series.

Upper Deck plates nine in fifth, tops Navigant 11-6

July 15, 2013

LINCOLN – Most skippers would agree: You take 'em how you can get 'em.

Upper Deck Post 86-14 took advantage of seven walks, a hit batsmen and three errors – all in a nine-run fifth frame – to register a stunning, come-from-behind 11-6 marathon victory over Navigant Post 85 at Chet Nichols Memorial Field on Monday night.

With the triumph, Upper Deck – which mustered only three hits in the contest – remained in first place in R.I. American Legion League-North Division action at 13-3 (18-5 overall), while co-manager Jim Gauthier's club fell to 12-5 in league play.

July 11, 2013

PAWTUCKET — Pineview All-Stars’ skipper Joe Clark received the good news on Tuesday night.
That is, his state champion Big League squad would, in fact, make the trip to the Eastern Regional Big League Tournament in Dover, Del.
After Pineview recorded an easy 10-1 victory over East Greenwich in the state title tilt at its own President’s Field on Sunday night, it qualified for its second straight and seventh berth in the regional affair in the past 10 years.

Cumberland wins 3-1 thriller over Warwick West Side to three-peat as Major Division state softball champs

July 11, 2013

NORTH SMITHFIELD — After steamrolling its opposition in its first eight games by a combined score of 107-17, Chris Bodington knew that his Cumberland All-Star team needed to sweat out a close contest somewhere down the line if it planned to take on the finest teams in New England in the extra-competitive Eastern Regionals.

Lincoln's Zammarelli selects Elon University over Red Sox

July 11, 2013

LINCOLN – Nick Zammarelli boarded a plane Thursday night fully confident that he made the correct decision – one that figures to benefit him in the long run.

As tempting as it was to turn pro, the recent Lincoln High School graduate believes in his heart of hearts that the pursuit can wait a few years. College life featuring side orders of education and baseball at North Carolina’s Elon University beckons for the 18-year-old Zammarelli following a spring and summer that can be best summed up as a whirlwind.

Rochester deals PawSox ninth straight defeat

July 11, 2013

PAWTUCKET — After having suffered eight straight defeats at Rochester and Lehigh Valley over the past eight days, the Pawtucket Red Sox desperately wanted to break that horrendous string against these same Red Wings on Thursday night.
The PawSox not only were swept in two consecutive four-game sets for the first time since last June 18-25, but went victory-less on a road trip of eight games or more dating back to 1988.

Cumberland American earns spot in District 4 semis

July 10, 2013

CUMBERLAND — Must-win pressure? Cumberland American showed zero signs of it on Wednesday night in its Pool A finale against Scituate-Foster.
Needing a victory to cement a spot in Friday’s District 4 Major Division semifinals at Ayotte Field, CALL cruised to its third triumph in four games by mercy-ruling S-F, 14-3, in four innings at Garvin Field.

July 9, 2013

CUMBERLAND — At 56 years of age, Scott Miller, a small business owner, doesn’t have to take part in the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge – a grueling, two-day, 192-mile trek from Sturbridge to the tip of Cape Cod in Provincetown.
The Cumberland resident just chooses to, and he has dozens of explanations as to why he participates in the longest, most difficult version of the PMC.

White, Quinlan help Elmwood Sports take 2-1 thriller

PAWTUCKET --- If Tuesday night’s game proved anything, it’s that, in baseball, a team should always play until the final out. Whenever a team is considered down and out, as long as three outs haven’t been recorded in the last inning, a team can still come out victorious.

McGair: DiSarcina following in the big-league footsteps of previous PawSox managers

July 8, 2013

PAWTUCKET – Sometimes, he’s simply carrying out marching orders from those above him. Other times, he engages in small talk, a sign that allows the ballplayers to comprehend that, yes, this particular minor-league manager will “have our backs if we heed his expectations.”

You see it during batting practice when PawSox skipper Gary DiSarcina sprays fungos to the infielders while standing not too far from the batting cage. A bum shoulder prevents DiSarcina from throwing a round or two. He makes up for it in other areas such as assuming an even greater instructional role.

Pineview claims third straight R.I. Big League crown

July 7, 2013

PAWTUCKET — Pineview Big League skipper Joe Clark revels in this kind of problem.

Thanks to his club’s simplistic 10-1 victory over East Greenwich in the championship game of the R.I. Big League (15-18) All-Star Tournament at its President’s Field home on Sunday afternoon, Clark and Co. earned a berth in the U.S. Eastern Regional Big League tourney in Dover, Del., one that begins Saturday.

With the title, unbeaten Pineview qualified for its third straight regional event, but will need to raise approximately $5,000 to make the trek.

Cumberland Town Council to consider Tucker Field project

July 7, 2013

CUMBERLAND – The Town Council is not scheduled to convene this month. Those plans have changed thanks to the proposed significant upgrades to the football and track portions of Tucker Field.

Parks and Recreation Director Michael Crawley confirmed late last week that everything’s in place for the council to gather this coming Wednesday night. The hope is that this special meeting will bring the town one step closer to commencing a construction project that some will say is long overdue.

Pawtucket’s Sanabria is dominant in 5-1 Pineview win

July 5, 2013

PAWTUCKET – Pineview Big League skipper Joe Clark admitted his club didn't exhibit the kind of superb defense he expected from a lot of high school players in a 3-2 victory over East Greenwich on Tuesday night.

Sure, Clark and Co. won the game, but they looked rather shaky doing it.

That's why he chose to have a short conference with his young men prior to facing Edgewood/South Elmwood in the R.I. Big League (15-18) All-Star Tournament's winners-bracket final at the Doreen A. Tomlinson Athletic Complex' Presidents' Field on Friday night.

Brian Doyle back in the winner's circle at Arnold Mills Road Race

July 4, 2013

CUMBERLAND – The old phrase “Familiarity breeds contempt” took a beating at the Arnold Mills Four-Mile Road Race on steamy Fourth of July morning.

Perhaps a better way to put the overall mood after Northeastern University junior-to-be Brian Doyle, the 20-year-old son of former Ocean State marathon great Bobby Doyle, crossed the finish line in a cautious but solid winning time of 21:07: The mutual admiration society.

July 3, 2013

PAWTUCKET – In Rubby De La Rosa and Anthony Carter, you have two PawSox pitchers who have come a long way since the end of April.

Validation for their efforts in the ensuing months came in the form of a nice reward Wednesday, as the pair was selected to represent the franchise and International League at the Triple-A All-Star Game. The midseason get-together pitting the best players from the I.L. and Pacific Coast League is on tap for Wednesday, July 17 in Reno, Nevada.

Middlebrooks supplies plenty of fireworks as PawSox out-slug RailRiders

July 3, 2013

PAWTUCKET – Where there’s a will, there’s a … possible return to the Boston Red Sox?

While it should be noted that Will Middlebrooks entered Pawtucket’s record books on Wednesday night, there is a much bigger picture to consider. The sledgehammer he took to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre’s pitching staff came with a note attached: I’m getting close.

RailRiders start fireworks early, down PawSox, 6-4

July 3, 2013

PAWTUCKET – The third largest crowd of the year to fill McCoy Stadium expected to see a solid pitching performance on Tuesday night.
But instead of watching a strong outing from one of the Boston Red Sox’s top prospects, they saw one from a journeyman reliever who is his first full season as a starter in eight years.

Cumberland snares 4th straight D.IV crown

July 2, 2013

CUMBERLAND -- As the girls representing the Cumberland A All-Star squad posed for family photos in center field, manager Chris Boddington just smiled, soaking in the joy.

His kids had just clinched the program’s fourth consecutive R.I. Little League District IV Major Division (11-12) Tournament crown after rolling to an 8-2 victory over North Smithfield on Tuesday, this before approximately 125 fans at Diamond Hill Park, and the head coach chuckled while holding yet another championship banner.
