Middlebrooks homers twice in PawSox's 9-6 loss

June 30, 2013

PAWTUCKET — It’s hard to believe, but for the first time this season, the Pawtucket Red Sox have lost three straight games.
The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders made the most out of eight extra-base hits (and their second straight game with four home runs) and overcame a big afternoon from PawSox third baseman Will Middlebrooks on Sunday in producing a 9-6 victory before the fourth largest crowd at McCoy Stadium.

PawSox's Huntzinger values move to bullpen

June 29, 2013

PAWTUCKET --- After opening his 2012 season with four woeful starts for the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs, Brock Huntzinger knew that something drastic needed to be done to resurrect not only his season, but possibly his career.

“I just felt like, ‘I get it, I know how this game works,” he recalled. “You either put up or (the organization) gets rid of you or sends you down. I knew there was more in the tank for me as a pitcher, so I had to do something.”

Five-run first dooms DALL to 9-4 defeat

June 28, 2013

PAWTUCKET – Prior to Darlington American's R.I. Little League District II All-Star Major Division (11-12) Tournament opener against Warren on rainy Wednesday, manager Kevin Andella struggled with whom to start on the hill: Co-aces Seth Watson or Chris Pierce.

He chose Watson, and it proved to be an outstanding move. The right-hander baffled the Warren lineup, hurling 3 1/3 innings of no-hit, nine-strikeout ball as DALL captured a satisfying 7-2 victory.

McGair: RIIL division alignment shouldn’t send mixed messages

June 28, 2013

A little of this, a little of that …

Based on recent discussion by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League’s Principals’ Committee on Athletics, it might be time to chisel in stone the following commandment:

“Thou shalt not alter the makeup of divisions in non-realignment years.”

The time has come to take a hard line on teams petitioning the PCOA to move up or down in the midst of a given realignment cycle. The 2013-14 school term marks the conclusion of a two-year realignment, a precursor to the presumed changes to the realignment formula that figure to take effect in 2014-15.

Lending a helping hand: Middlebrooks shows PawSox SS Bogaerts the ropes at third base

June 27, 2013

PAWTUCKET – Xander Bogaerts took groundballs at McCoy Stadium on Thursday afternoon, a pregame ritual that the promising shortstop has down to a science.

This particular day was different. Not only was Bogaerts taking grounders at third base, but – as an added bonus – he was the under the tutelage of someone who knows a thing or two about manning the hot corner.

Cumberland gets an 'A' for big softball win over N.S.

June 26, 2013

CUMBERLAND — The names have changed, but the results have stayed the same.
A year after cruising through the District IV ranks, as well as the best teams the rest of Rhode Island had to offer, en route to its second straight Major Division state championship, Cumberland’s formidable ‘A’ team picked up where it left off by earning its third mercy-rule victory in as many games before a large gathering at Diamond Hill Park.

Middlebrooks doesn’t plan to stay with PawSox for long

June 26, 2013

PAWTUCKET – Will Middlebrooks spoke so softly that it felt as if the PawSox clubhouse had been transformed into a church.

The struggling third baseman didn’t attempt to mask his disappointment regarding a season that has hardly gone according to plan. For the moment, finding a silver lining in the fact that he was sent down is an impossible endeavor. It probably didn’t ease Middlebrooks’ frustration that Wednesday’s Red Sox-Rockies’ game was being featured on the clubhouse’s main television.

Stricker, Van Pelt capture CVS Caremark Charity Classic title in record-breaking fashion

June 25, 2013

BARRINGTON – Local legend Billy Andrade knew he and playing partner Bill Haas slowly had been creeping up the leaderboard at this 15th annual CVS Caremark Charity Classic on humid Tuesday, but never knew just how close they were to the front-runners, the duo of Steve Stricker and Bo Van Pelt.
When Haas knocked down a 10-foot birdie putt on the 452-yard, par-four 13th to move he and Andrade to 19-under, the board just behind the green indicated they had sliced the gap to a mere shot.

Chalk up yet another successful CVS tournament!

June 25, 2013

BARRINGTON – There’s always something so reassuring when an event such as the CVS Caremark Charity Classic concludes on this note, “See you next year.”

The words – echoed by Bristol native and co-host Billy Andrade shortly after the winning tandem of Steve Stricker and Bo Van Pelt took their bows on the 18th green at Rhode Island Country Club – helped in providing reassurance that the CVS event will feature a 16th installment.

Familiar faces await Middlebrooks in Pawtucket

June 25, 2013

PAWTUCKET – Will Middlebrooks does not need Pawtucket manager Gary DiSarcina or hitting coach Dave Joppie – two names who have previous player-coach relationships with the scuffling third baseman – to get in his face and flat-out tell the owner of a .192 big-league batting average this season where the areas of improvement lie.

“He knows what he needs to do,” said DiSarcina in anticipation of Middlebrooks’ arrival at McCoy Stadium on Wednesday, one day after getting informed by Boston skipper John Farrell that his season-long offensive funk had earned him a demotion to the Triple-A ranks.

Stricker, Van Pelt take charge at CVS with 62

June 24, 2013

BARRINGTON – Billy Andrade has spent most of his time playing the role of good host at the CVS Caremark Charity Classic. Come Tuesday morning, the Bristol native will look to make a surge that will enable him to capture the $1.55-million tournament he co-hosts with fellow Rhode Islander Brad Faxon.

Thompson, Pressel wow fans before U.S. Women’s Open

June 24, 2013

BARRINGTON – To say that Lexi Thompson has a busy week ahead doesn’t exactly paint the entire picture.
Then again, Morgan Pressel isn’t exactly idling away the hours herself.
Even though Thompson, a rising star on the LPGA Tour, has an eye on the U.S. Women’s Open that’s scheduled for later this week on Long Island’s Sebonack Golf Club, the 18-year-old was dead set on coming to Rhode Island Country Club to participate in the CVS Caremark Charity Classic for the second straight year.

June 23, 2013

Toeing the rubber in the top of the ninth was a strikeout specialist from Pennsylvania. His batterymate behind the dish was a high-average hitter from Alabama.
And leading off for the Ocean State Waves of the New England Collegiate Baseball League stood Pawtucket’s Nick Sebastian.
Before Sebastian strolled to the plate with his Waves losing 3-2 to the Laconia Muskrats, he had spent a lengthy time on his baseball journey outside of his hometown until the Waves brought him back to Rhode Island.

Red Sox think top prospect Bogaerts catches on fast

June 21, 2013

PAWTUCKET -- On a late March day in Fort Myers, Fla., Xander Bogaerts could have accepted what the lineup card stipulated and left it at that.

The Red Sox prospect and now the newest member of the PawSox, however, was comfortable enough in his own skin to approach the powers-that-be and show his eagerness and enthusiasm for the game he is paid to play.

According to one staff member, the sequence helped cast the player in a whole new light.

New England flavor at Northeast Amateur

June 20, 2013

EAST PROVIDENCE — Bobby Leopold would have loved to compete in more amateur tourneys this spring, but just couldn't find the time.
On December 10, he and his wife, Taylor, became proud new parents of Grayson Robert, now a bouncing six-month-old boy, so – naturally – most of his days, and of course nights, are devoted to his baby and work.

Cumberland's Randall shoots 70 on Day 1 of Northeast Amateur

June 19, 2013

EAST PROVIDENCE – Regrets? Every golfer has some upon the round’s conclusion.

The ones that Jamison Randall expressed followed his one-over 70 performance on Day 1 of the Northeast Amateur Invitational didn’t equate to the Cumberland lad singing the blues. Had the golf gods been kinder, perhaps Randall’s Wednesday score would have been closer to the low number Brazil’s Rafael Becker posted – a minus-seven 62 that featured an eye-popping eight birdies.

PawSox' DiSarcina: Honesty’s best policy with player moves

June 19, 2013

PAWTUCKET — Never has a trip to the principal’s office been more soothing and reassuring.

Score one for PawSox manager Gary DiSarcina for putting out the fire before it engulfed the clubhouse he oversees. There was a delicate situation that needed to be addressed with several Pawtucket players, and DiSarcina handled every last conversation with aplomb.

“That’s what the job of a manager is. You have to manage those people,” stated DiSarcina matter-of-factly.

Lincoln revels in another perfect softball season, state title

June 19, 2013

LINCOLN – Casie Beauchemin, Lincoln High's heralded junior right fielder, sat back on a bench in front of the school early Wednesday afternoon trying to convey how incredible it felt to be a part of a team that not only captured two consecutive state Division I titles, but did so with an unblemished 43-0 mark.

Cumberland's Randall ready to tackle links at Northeast Amateur

June 18, 2013

EAST PROVIDENCE – How Jamison Randall landed a coveted spot in this week’s Northeast Amateur Invitational can be traced back to last summer’s noteworthy accomplishment on the links.

For the Cumberland High alumnus and junior-to-be at Virginia’s Old Dominion University, winning the R.I. Stroke Play Championship was akin to feasting one’s eyes on a golden ticket after opening a Wonka bar.
