Tolman sweeps E.P., heads to Div. III hockey finals

March 10, 2013

PAWTUCKET — The instant the final horn sounded, the Tolman High players on the Lynch Arena ice and those on the bench raced to senior netminder Jared DaSilva to mob him, celebrate perhaps the most-craved win ever recorded in school hockey history.
Months after receiving word this would be the squad's last hoorah, due to a dwindling number of incoming freshmen and only a few underclassmen on the bandwagon, the senior-oriented Tigers wanted to end it all in style.

March 10, 2013

A little of this, a little of that …

The gate to the memory bank swung open Wednesday upon learning that Ryan Westmoreland was retiring from the Red Sox.

Tolman skates to Game 1 victory over E.P.

March 9, 2013

CRANSTON --- East Providence got the large ice surface it wanted as the host of the first game of its Division III best-of-three semifinal-round series with Tolman on Friday night.
The Townies got a bit of momentum from their ‘Senior Night’ festivities that took place prior to the opener, and they also got to dress a full complement of players (20), while the Tigers were only able to suit up a dozen.
But in the end, Tolman got the only thing that mattered the most – a hard-fought triumph over the league’s defending champions.

Former pro hoopster tells story to area students

March 8, 2013

WOONSOCKET --- Chris Herren did a fair amount of traveling during his collegiate and professional basketball careers, not only touring arenas throughout the United States, but also finishing his hoop career overseas in Europe and Asia.
It’s been 6½ years since Herren last played professionally, but these days, he’s still flying coast to coast and racking up frequent flyer miles.

Getting to know Classical's hoopsters through the eyes of area coaches

March 8, 2013

KINGSTON – Just what exactly can North Smithfield’s princes of the hardwood expect at URI’s Ryan Center on Friday?
Upon some discussion with two area Division I boys’ basketball head coaches whose teams squared off against Classical this winter, the general consensus is that if North Smithfield so much as sneezes the wrong way, T.J. Ciolfi’s crew could end up trapped in a spider web with little or no chance of escape.

Lincoln/Cumberland Co-op drops Game 1 of Div. II title series in double OT

March 7, 2013

PROVIDENCE — In three previous Division II-DeCosta meetings this winter, the Lincoln/Cumberland Co-op squad had surrendered 13 goals while notching just four of its own against the defending state D-II champions Barrington/Mount Hope/Portsmouth girls.
In those tilts, the Lions suffered defeats of 6-1 on Dec. 15, 3-2 on Feb. 16 and 4-1 nine days later.

Lincoln/Cumberland Co-op faces tall order in Division II finals

March 5, 2013

CUMBERLAND — During the early afternoon hours Sunday, approximately 16 hours after what was most certainly the most impactful and thrilling triumph in the two-year history of the Lincoln/Cumberland Co-op girls' hockey program, senior captain Jean Bray and her teammates congregated at freshman phenom Cassidy Simanski's home.
They did so for what Bray called a “Hair-Dyeing Party.

Lions vs. Clippers highlights semifinal slate in boys' hockey

March 5, 2013

Looking for a good semifinal-round series to follow this weekend?
It’s going to be awfully tough to pick just one.
Two series contain neighboring teams battling each other. Another features the region’s best parochial school team taking on the state’s top public school squad, and the fourth is a battle between two teams that saw two of their three regular-season games end in ties.
The best-of-three action begins on Friday, and the Division I series featuring Burrillville and Cranston West kicks off the schedule with an early 7 p.m. game at Levy Arena.

End of the line for Lady Patriots, Northmen

March 5, 2013

PROVIDENCE — As most people expected, No. 1 seeded Middletown and defending champion Juanita Sanchez won their Division III semifinal-round games on Monday night at Rhode Island College.
But they didn’t leave the Tripp Athletic Center without getting tough battles from Davies and North Smithfield, which despite coming up short in their respective bids to reach Sunday’s title game at URI’s Ryan Center, turned in admirable performances.

Second-year Lincoln/Cumberland co-op team advances to Div. II girls' championship series

March 3, 2013

PAWTUCKET — Once the final horn had sounded, Lincoln/Cumberland Co-op head coach Dick Ernst spoke to his enthused pride of Lions in its second-floor locker room above the Lynch Arena ice on Saturday night before he strolled into the nearby press box.
There, he took a seat in a cushy leather chair and grinned, “That was something. That was something! Did you see that passing? Unbelievable!”
Ernst had been referring to his squad's 5-1 beatdown of the Narragansett/North Kingstown/South Kingstown in the second game of this best-of-three R.I. Division II Tournament semifinal set.

Moses Brown ousts SRA girls in Div. II quarterfinals

March 3, 2013

PROVIDENCE — There were bodies scrambling around the hardwood and guttural signs of exhaust.
There was also a thrilling comeback bid by a St. Raphael outfit that trailed by a dozen points with just over five minutes remaining. Alas, the quest to overtake Moses Brown fell just short as the Saints’ season ended in a 44-40 loss to Moses Brown in Sunday’s R.I. Division II Tournament quarterfinal-round contest at Rhode Island College.

Lincoln, Tolman advance to hockey semifinals

March 3, 2013

WEST WARWICK -- Unlike the other three Division II quarterfinal-round series in the state, unbeaten Lincoln was able to sweep its best-of-three series with eighth-seeded East Greenwich on Saturday at the West Warwick Civic Center.
For the second straight night, the Lions skated to a 3-2 win over the Avengers, but unlike their victory in the series opener, Lincoln (19-0-1) needed to work overtime to put away its longtime foe.

Dulieu to the rescue for Clippers, who win in OT

March 1, 2013

WOONSOCKET -- Jaryd Dulieu couldn’t have picked a perfect time to score the biggest goal of his high school career.
The senior co-captain lit the lamp on a pass from Jake Salisbury 3:51 into overtime to lift the Clippers to a 3-2 triumph over the Rogers/Tiverton/Rocky Hill co-op squad on Friday night in the opening contest of their best-of-three Division II quarterfinal-round series at Adelard Arena.

Hockey Tigers draw first blood, strike down Thunderbolts

March 1, 2013

PAWTUCKET — In a free-wheeling contest that saw a total of 15 penalties called for a whopping 30 minutes, Tolman High recorded a 4-1 triumph over Cranston East in the first game of a best-of-three R.I. Division III Tournament quarterfinal series at Lynch Arena on Friday night.
Junior Jared Pedro, who had been nursing a dislocated shoulder, closed with a pair of goals, despite playing as a defenseman to keep the injury out of harm's way. Elder brother and senior tri-captain Ryan Pedro manufactured a goal and two assists.

Ex-PC Friars standout God Shammgod can relate to Ricky Ledo

March 1, 2013

PROVIDENCE — As if on cue, God Shammgod started talking about Ricky Ledo’s situation.
Mind you, there wasn’t a lead-in question posed to Shammgod with the intent of correlating his two-year playing stint at Providence College to the same temptations of leaving school prematurely that Ledo will deal with soon enough. Sitting in Alumni Hall’s cafeteria the other day, the conversation with the now 36-year-old Shammgod began with how much he’s enjoyed being back on PC’s campus as an undergrad student and a member of Ed Cooley’s basketball staff.
