Correa leads Saints to 57-49 hoop win over Novans

PAWTUCKET — St. Raphael Academy head coach Tom Sorrentine closed his post-game interview this way: “We've had trouble with size inside all year long, and that's got to change.”
Minutes before, Sorrentine watched as Woonsocket High big men Gare Lyles and Piotr Linek tore down rebound after rebound in their Division I-North clash at Alumni Hall on Thursday night.
In the end, however, the Saints overcame that height, utilized an 11-5 surge in the span of 6:59 late in the final stanza and garnered a 57-49 victory before about 150 fans.

Pawtucket's Yosinoff savors 700th win at Emmanuel

PAWTUCKET — Just a few days after Andy Yosinoff earned his 700th career victory as the head coach of the Emmanuel College women's hoop team – it came Saturday afternoon, Jan. 26, courtesy of a 76-49 blowout victory over Lasell at the Jean Yawkey Center – he admitted the achievement was still sinking in.
“Can I believe it? I don't know,” the 64-year-old Pawtucket native chuckled via phone from his athletic department office. “If you do something long enough, I guess you can accomplish things you never thought you would. Longevity is the key.

Cumberland's Baxter signs LOI with nearby Bryant

CUMBERLAND — Mitchell Baxter had a perfectly good reason to step inside Cumberland High’s main office at 8 a.m. on Wednesday.
With his heart and mind firmly made up about joining the Bryant University football family, Baxter faxed in his National Letter of Intent to the NCAA Division I FCS member. A senior who played a key role in the Clippers capturing the Division II Super Bowl this past fall, Baxter had also considered Assumption (Mass.) College, Southern Connecticut State, West Virginia’s Fairmont State University and Plymouth (N.H.) State.

Davies girls take 49-45 thriller from Bishop Keough

LINCOLN — If Davies plans to win its first regular-season division championship in nine years, then the Patriots are going to have to survive a gauntlet of tough games over these final 10 days.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Patriots passed their first test by winning a tight game with Bishop Keough. Thanks to its strong performances on the boards and on defense, Davies was able to secure a 49-45 victory that gave the hosts their eighth win in their last nine games.

SRA girls rebound from loss, top Lincoln, 49-37

LINCOLN — If ever there was a time for St. Raphael Academy to find the wherewithal to overcome adversity and regain momentum, Wednesday night's Division II crossover clash with Lincoln High was it.
The Lions proved to be more-than-gritty foes, forcing the Saints into 18 turnovers and more fouls than head coach Fred Saunders had desired.
In the end, however, senior co-captain Lauren Gaj collected 15 points, 11 rebounds and two blocks while junior swing Becca Gonzalez added another 15 points, 10 boards and three assists as St. Raphael posted a tough 49-37 triumph at the Lions' Den.
