Falowo fights tough Texas middleweight tonight

July 18, 2012

LINCOLN — The last time local fight fans saw Thomas Falowo in action, they were in an uproar over the split decision victory awarded to his opponent, Samuel Clarkson of Cedar Hill, Texas.
In that middleweight fight back on May 24 at Twin River, Falowo not only ruled four of the six rounds, but he also delivered a first-round knockdown.
And while Clarkson ended the night looking like he’d tussled in a 12-round slugfest, Falowo had barely a scratch on him.

Iglesias, Linares are PawSox's 'Cuban Connection'

July 18, 2012

PAWTUCKET — The sight of Jose Iglesias and J.C. Linares engaging in playful banter in their native tongue often leads to one or both players breaking out into mischievous smiles. Usually the exchange is often loud enough that everyone in the PawSox clubhouse is aware that Iglesias and Linares are up to their old tricks.
Then again, not everyone can understand what is actually being discussed, so it’s like Iglesias and Linares are the only ones in the room, operating in a universe that only a select few have the privilege of completely understanding.

Who's on third? Gomez, with some hard work

July 17, 2012

PAWTUCKET – Now that Mauro Gomez has acquired a taste of life as a big-league third baseman, the real work can begin.
First things first, though, as Gomez plans to acquire a glove that’s tailor made for someone entrusted with patrolling the hot corner. After that, the next step will entail the 27-year-old working specifically on his footwork with throwing across the diamond serving as the final hurdle.

Repko finds himself victim of numbers game

July 16, 2012

PAWTUCKET – All Jason Repko can do is sit tight, hoping that his chance at parole from baseball’s version of no-man’s-land comes sooner rather than later.
Repko’s placement on the disabled list on July 7 has absolutely nothing do with the hamstring strain that has hamstrung the 31-year-old outfielder to the point that even the player doesn’t know when he’ll be activated. For someone who is completely healthy, Repko finds himself the victim of a numbers game due to the Red Sox being presently flush with outfielders at the major-league and Triple-A levels.

DALL falls to Barrington in District II title game

July 16, 2012

Contributing writer
PAWTUCKET --- At no point in its 13-5 defeat to Barrington on Monday night at Slater Park did Darlington American ever think the game was over, or even out of reach.
Barrington scored three runs on seven hits in the first inning, but DALL responded the very next frame with two of their own to make it a one-run game.
In the bottom of the second, Barrington added three more, but again, Darlington American responded with a run of its own in the top of the third to make it a 6-3 contest.

DALL to face Barrington in R.I. District II title game

July 15, 2012

BARRINGTON — Thanks to some bottom-of-the-sixth-inning heroics courtesy of Sean Dunphy, Darlington American is now one victory away from capturing the program’s first R.I. Little League District II Major Division banner since 2000.
Dunphy broke a 9-all tie with a home run on a 2-1 count, propelling Darlington to a dramatic 10-9 walk-off triumph against Barrington Sunday night at Sherwood Field. Barrington scored four runs in the top of the sixth to tie this District II final game, but DALL and Dunphy responded with two down in the frame.

Longtime E.P. football head coach to stay aboard after pondering retirement

July 15, 2012

SEEKONK — As often is the case during the summer, Sandy Gorham could be found standing on a local pool deck exhorting his Kendbrin Swim and Tennis Club competitors to be the best they can be.
On Thursday, the site just happened to be the six-lane, 25-meter Grist Mill club facility; that's where Kendbrin was competing in an cabana club league dual meet.

McGair: Youkilis' agent says client in good frame of mind; the importance of cutting off Carl Crawford's throws

July 15, 2012

We’ll guess that Kevin Youkilis steps into the batter’s box at Fenway Park around 7:13 Monday night — three minutes after Red Sox pitcher Aaron Cook rocks back and issues the first offering of the game.

Crawford goes 2-for-3 in rehab stint with PawSox

July 12, 2012

PAWTUCKET — Carl Crawford has 142 million reasons to play for the Boston Red Sox in 2012.
The injured outfielder also has 142 millions reasons why he should shut himself down, undergo Tommy John surgery like he hinted at last weekend, and start planning for the future.
When Crawford does return to the BoSox, he will not be 100 percent. That hasn’t stopped him from looking ahead to Monday, which is when the 30-year-old hopes to play in his first major-league game of what to date has been an empty vessel of a season.

Kalish's callup to Boston was 'good learning experience'

July 12, 2012

PAWTUCKET – Just because Ryan Kalish spent some time with the Boston Red Sox recently doesn’t mean the outfielder is completely in the clear of the shoulder and neck injuries that whitewashed his 2011 season.

Pineview Big League club treks to Eastern Regionals

July 12, 2012

PAWTUCKET --- For Pineview manager Joe Clark, traveling with his Big League ballclub to Dover, Del. on the second weekend of each July has become almost an annual tradition.
That weekend is when the Eastern Regional Tournament gets under way, and in six of the last eight seasons, Pineview has ventured down Route 95 to represent Rhode Island.
Pineview’s best finish during those six trips has been a pair of third-place finishes, the last one coming in 2010.

Ex-Red Sox backstop offers observations, critiques of Lavarnway, Saltalamacchia

July 9, 2012

PAWTUCKET — Sunday marked the first time Bob Montgomery saw Ryan Lavarnway up close and in person. Studying the Pawtucket Red Sox catcher from the television booth in the press box located high above McCoy Stadium, Montgomery made good use of the monitor adjacent to him, particularly when tracking Lavarnway’s mitt motion as he received the ball from the pitcher.

Good news for Red Sox -- the cavalry's coming back!

July 8, 2012

PAWTUCKET – Clay Buchholz and Jacoby Ellsbury didn’t gallop out of McCoy Stadium on white horses. Still, it’s hard not to get all “wild, wild west,” sensing that the cavalry is heading toward Fenway Park – and not a moment too soon.

Extra-base hits fuel CALL's victory over Bernon

July 6, 2012

WOONSOCKET — Cumberland American All-Stars skipper Bruce Stanford knew he had a decent-hitting club, but nothing like this.
His Nos. 4, 5 and 7 hitters finished 10-for-10 with nine RBI and eight runs scored as CALL rolled to a wildly-entertaining 12-6 victory over Bernon’s best in a R.I. District IV Major Division Tournament Pool B tilt at Ayotte Field on Friday night.

Middlebrooks' sister is PawSox intern

July 4, 2012

PAWTUCKET — Lacey Middlebrooks arrived in this city, fully expecting to see brother Will Middlebrooks hone his craft with the Pawtucket Red Sox while fulfilling her internship requirements with the Triple-A ball club.
Borrowing from an idiom, “The best-laid plans of mice and men oft go astray.” Yes, there is a Middlebrooks presently at McCoy Stadium, yet instead of someone making connections with fans seated behind the outfield fence, this particular Middlebrooks is building a rapport as a pre-game, on-field coordinator and press box contributor.

Magill captures sixth Arnold Mills Road Race

July 4, 2012

CUMBERLAND – Add the ages of the second- and third-place finishers together and you would get 39, the age of the winner of the 44th edition of the Arnold Mills Road Race.
As 23-year-old Scott Twardowski and Colin Tierney, 16, learned on Fourth of July Wednesday, there’s still plenty of life left in the feet of Chris Magill, now a six-time champion of the holiday running event. The individual title – achieved in 21:06, which was 13 seconds better than Rehoboth’s Twardowski and 21 seconds quicker than East Greenwich’s Tierney – represents the first for Magill since 2006.

Miller's pep talk helps Bard during tough stretch

July 2, 2012

PAWTUCKET – About a week ago, Daniel Bard and Andrew Miller went out for dinner in Boston. Sure, it was a prime opportunity for two good and longtime friends to catch up, yet the time spent between these two former University of North Carolina teammates boiled down to one particular subject matter.

Lincoln holds off EWLL for District IV victory

July 2, 2012

WOONSOCKET -- While a few East Woonsocket Little League officials re-manicured Hartnett Field after the late Monday afternoon downpour, Lincoln All-Stars’ head coach Frank Kelly quietly told a parent, “I’ll be happy just to get out of here with a win.”
His players more than obliged. Behind a stellar starting pitching performance by righty Joe Voccola, not to mention a pair of pinch-hit home runs, Lincoln posted a 6-4 triumph over East Woonsocket’s best in a R.I. District IV Tournament Pool A playoff tilt.
