Shea boys' soccer team holds off Hope for 2-0 win

October 16, 2012

PROVIDENCE – Shea High head coach Pierre Ridore admitted afterward he was just glad to escape the Hope High pitch with a triumph.
For most of the final stanza, his Raiders guarded a 1-0 cushion with aplomb, but it seemed it all would go for naught after officials whistled a Shea defender for a foul against senior Brayan Sucuqui in his own penalty box with only five minutes to play in regulation.
For that infraction, they awarded Sucuqui a penalty kick.

October 11, 2012

NORTH SMITHFIELD — It was a simple question, and North Smithfield High head coach Jeremy Sherer responded in kind.
When asked if he was satisfied with his Northmen’s 2-0 Division II victory over East Providence early Thursday evening, he stated merely, “No.”
He claimed he had good reason.
“You know, we’ve had two really good wins this year; the first one against Pilgrim, and the second against Tiverton,” he elaborated. “They’re both very strong teams, and when we play those types of teams, we do very well. In big games, we step it up a couple of notches.

Tolman's Clark haunts Woonsocket again in 6-2 win

October 10, 2012

WOONSOCKET -- Back on Friday, Sept. 14, Tolman High senior Ashley Clark registered five goals in a rather easy 9-1 thumping of Woonsocket at the McKinnon-Alves Complex.
She failed in her attempt to repeat that feat during the two teams’ Division III-A rematch at Barry Field on rainy Wednesday afternoon.
Still, head coach Bel Pereira didn’t mind a bit; why would he? Clark netted four tallies and senior defender Amber Duhamel did a superb job of defending the Villa Novans’ stellar senior quad-captain and striker Krislyn Godin in the Tigers’ 6-2 triumph.

Cumberland's Crawley eyes superb finish to cross country season

October 8, 2012

CUMBERLAND — The dual meet portion of the cross-country season is safely in the books. The early-in-the-week gatherings involving schools squaring off against their regional rivals has given way to a postseason gamut that is far more demanding and extensive due to the field expanding.
To Trevor Crawley, shifting from the sport’s unofficial “warm-up act” to a series of defined gatherings of harriers is not akin to a mystery wrapped in an enigma. To date, everything the Cumberland High senior has done on the trails has been geared toward what lies ahead, albeit with a slight twist.

Stressing the importance of the kicking game

October 4, 2012

Often times the importance of the kicking game at the high school level can go undervalued or overlooked. Blame such shortsightedness on the premium coaches and players place on strategizing offensively and defensively throughout the week, the attention paid to more crucial matters, in turn rendering the very idea of place-kicking and punting duties influencing the final outcome to mundane qualities.

McGair: Bobby V had a chance to return, but he couldn’t help himself

October 4, 2012

A little of this, a little of that …

Believe it or not, as far-flung as this may sound, there was a time when this corner believed Bobby Valentine would somehow be granted a stay of execution and return as manager of the Red Sox next season.

October 2, 2012

CENTRAL FALLS — In the mist and muck at Macomber Stadium on Tuesday night, Shea High desperately wanted to pull off an upset over undefeated Division I nemesis Central Falls.

Soccer star: C.F.'s Rodriguez leads state in goals

October 1, 2012

Head coach Carl Africo points to one game in particular to define Central Falls High senior forward Cristian Rodriguez’ uncanny ability to put the ball in the net.
“We were playing Smithfield in a non-league match, and – early on – the guys really didn’t know how to play him,” Africo recalled late last week of what turned out to be a 6-1 pasting of the host Sentinels. “They decided to give him (shots with) his right foot, and he scored two goals in the first half.
