PAWTUCKET — As interim athletic director for St. Raphael Academy, Fred Saunders is being called upon to guide the department while the search to replace Bruce Gammell takes place. The void was created following Gammell’s resignation late last month.
Gammell’s decision to relocate to Florida was viewed in some corners as curious, given that fall high school sports were set to start. For his last official act before leaving, Gammell, who also taught at St. Raphael, recommended to the administration that Saunders be hired in the meantime.
CUMBERLAND – Winning another Northern Division title would be nice, but that’s not the No. 1 priority for head coach Tom Kenwood and his Cumberland High squad this fall.
With a talented team with plenty of depth, the Clippers are hoping to place among the top six at the state meet in early November and earn a ticket to the New England Championship. The last time that’s been done was the 2005-06 season when the Cumberland placed third behind team champion Bishop Hendricken.
