East Providence beats Mounties in eight innings

April 27, 2011

EAST PROVIDENCE — This was a case of déjà vu that East Providence High liked and Mount St. Charles Academy didn’t.
Courtney DeCastro’s second walkoff hit of the season, a run-scoring single with two outs in the home half of the eighth inning, drove in younger sister Amy DeCastro with the run that helped the Townies grab a 2-1 victory over the Mounties in their Division I crossover affair at Pierce Field.

Cranston West hands Lincoln first loss

CRANSTON — The never-say-die attitude was there. So too were the late-game heroics that some have come to associate Lincoln High baseball with.
On a sun-splashed Tuesday afternoon, the end result went astray from the now one-beaten Lions. A valiant comeback bid was nullified thanks to Cranston West’s Alex Moretti’s two-out double with one on in the bottom of the seventh, lifting the Falcons to the 8-7 walk-off triumph. Moretti’s clutch knock touched down in the right-centerfield gap, chasing home catcher Jeff Diehl with the winning run.

Cumberland boys remain perfect in track

CUMBERLAND — Ask any of the girls’ coaches about who would win Tuesday’s Northern Division showdown between host Cumberland High and unbeaten squads Woonsocket and Central Falls and the response was the same.
They simply didn’t have a clue.
“This is going to be a close meet,” said Woonsocket coach Dan Richard midway into the competition. “I thought before the meet, plus or minus five points between all three schools.”
