CENTRAL FALLS â For years when he was working as a driving school instructor in France, Leo Heroux would request to have June 6 off to go to the beach.
But it was no ordinary vacation day.
Heroux's destination was always Omaha Beach â a place that, despite its natural beauty, brings back painful memories of the carnage he witnessed as a young soldier in the aftermath of the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944.
PAWTUCKET â According to the latest data from the Rhode Island KIDS COUNT Factbook, there are many reasons for concern over Pawtucket children and their future well being. Yet, there are also a few bright spots on the horizon to offset mostly grim statistics.
PROVIDENCE â Gov. Lincoln Chafee declared Monday that âthis is a new day at EDC,â because the RI Economic Development Corp. will start being more cautious about the way it doles out taxpayersâ money.
âWeâve been scorched; weâve been burned, as it stands now,â Chafee acknowledged. âRhode Islanders should know I am conservative by nature with every dollar and I always have been, as a mayor, as a (U.S.) senator, as a governor. There is going to be a full analysis before any investment is made.â
