Police identify man who died in fire

PAWTUCKET — While police and fire officials continue to investigate the cause of Tuesday's deadly blaze at 681 Broadway, Pawtucket Police have identified the victim as Derrek Ellerbe, age 57.
Just after 5 p.m., members of the Pawtucket Police and Fire Departments responded to the three-story apartment house for a report of a structure fire.
When they arrived, there was heavy smoke coming from the third floor.
According to Police Maj. Arthur Martins, one man, later identified as Ellerbe, was found unresponsive in a third-floor apartment.

Chafee defends plan to Chamber

PROVIDENCE — Just two weeks after businesspeople from across the state flocked to the Statehouse to fight Gov. Lincoln Chafee’s sales tax plan, Chafee marched into his opponents’ camp, a Northern Rhode Island Chamber of Commerce breakfast, to defend his proposal.
“There is no doubt that taxes are harmful, there’s no argument about that,” Chafee said in response to a question from Times Publisher Barry Mechanic. “It’s a cost we don’t want to pay.”

Battle looms over school contract

PAWTUCKET — Once again, while a majority of school officials are touting the money savings benefits of the newly approved teachers' contract, City Councilors are vowing to keep pushing for their right to review and give final ratification of the agreement.
